I have a firebox, and I absolutely love it. The pres sound pretty clean to me, there are and it has space for 2 more line inputs on the back so if you decide you want to use a pre with more color, you can go outboard. The pres are combo jack so you can use Instruments on the front too...

Never been a fan of the Metal Zone at all....waaaay too brittle for me. If used properly, the DS-1 (even the non-keeley) can be pretty subtle.

Just the VST on a DI track will work, but in order to use POD farm, you have to have a Line6 interface. The toneport, for example. You don't have to use it to record the DI track if you have a different interface, but the toneport acts as a dongle for the POD farm program.
