    sennheiser e835 vs. shure 58

Sound techs often refuse to, or are shy to use a person's mic because they are unfamiliar with it, or because they are very familiar with problems it will introduce in a particular room. That does not make it a bad mic. The 58 is my favorite live vocal mic, because I know that every tech in the...

    Which mics where?

You should record drums and bass together at first. Use all of your mics on the drumkit, and DI the bass (plug it in directly, or use a DI box). If you're not very experienced with mic placement, you might try using the SM57's as room mics. This assumes that your room sounds okay, but...

Could have been problems with my firewall.. give it another shot.

    Public Mix Contest #6

Wow.. what a great song! I started mixing at about 6am, and finished at 7am. This song is great! I'll probably revisit this tommorow, since I've been mixing for over 10 hours straight, so I don't know how objective I am. Here's my first crack at it.. criticism welcome...

    That Nady Ribbon is out

Well, follow the link in mig27's post, and have a listen. I'm not sure if I would use "sizzle" to describe the sound, but sure did accentuate the musical aspects of the acoustic guitar, and beat the crap out of the oktava IMHO. BAH.. correction.. I just realized I was listening to the T-Bone...

    That Nady Ribbon is out

Take my opinion with a grain of salt.. I don't know the first thing about ribbon mics, but mmm... I sure loved the sound.

    track bleeding

This is a tape-head alignment problem. You *may* not be able to fix it for tracks you have already recorded. It should also be noted that even with perfect tape head alignment, small tape machines are likely to have *very small* amounts of bleed. If you can post a single track as an mp3, it...

    That Nady Ribbon is out

I'm thoroughly impressed. Liked it better than the Neumann.. much better, and the difference isn't subtle.

    What causes DC offset problems?

The culprit is most likely the analog mixing board, but could be the motu. An analog mixing board should not pass DC, so if there is a DC offset in the original recording, it should have dissapeared at your board. Most analog gear filters DC at the input and output stages.

    Guess the gear game

Forgive me if this post is a duplicate, I posted a few minutes ago, and I can't find the thread anywhere.. anyhoo: I believe this is the first mix I am posting on HomerRecording.com for criticism. Any comments, positive, negative, or positive are welcome ;) Bear in mind that this mix was done...

    Level Metering

I have waivered into both schools of thought because in live mixing I *always* strive to keep faders at unity. There are many reasons for this including the obvious one that most people seem to miss -- when faders are at unity they are LEAST sensitive, which allows you to make subtle adjustments...

My voice is impossible to eq

Another side-note. I have had singers complain that their vocals sound unnaturally thin after I roll off their lows. This problem dissapears very quickly once they hear themselves in the mix.

My voice is impossible to eq

Roll off the lows and then adjust the gain to hit unity again. That will get rid of excessive "warmth" and "mud". As a general rule, roll off lows to make things stick out, and roll off highs to bury them.. if you do this, and then group vocals into a compressor, you'll get great results with...

    Shure57/58

The answer is.... yes. They're identical from the xlr jack right up to the capsule. The 58 is better protected from spit, and the 57 can get closer to a source. The difference between the sound of a 57 and a 58 might be no greater than the sound difference between two 57's or two 58's.

    Sony Electret Condenser Microphones

I've never worked with these mics, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but everything I've ever used that has the name "SONY" printed on it has a super-hyped high end, with only one exception, a particularly expensive pair of headphones that one of the local sound-guys uses for checking his...

Recording gear for Vocal, what mic/ do I need preamp? is that it

What you have is entry level gear.. but don't worry. Entry level gear makes acceptable recordings. So now you're looking for a pre-amp and a microphone. A mic and a pre-amp is indeed all you still need to make recordings. For a microphone, a good beginner mic is the SM57. A good begginner...

    Seeking Clarity!

Post a sample.. it will make it easier to tell where the problem is. Also, the fact that you only notice the sound is bad *after* you pop it into a CD player suggests you're not using very good monitors.

    Solved First recording attempt

You have a great voice. Very good recordings for a first try. I have to agree that the distorted sounds suck. I've gotten some good fake distorted sounds from Amplitube software.

    Doubling vocals.

Roll off the treble for background parts. Roll off the bass for foreground parts.

    Favorite Dynamics?

Electro Voice N/D 308 on guitar amplifiers. Found one in the mic-kit at a local club I was mixing -- life saver. The diversity of dynamics makes them worth their weight in gold in studio sessions. In my opinion, the homogony of modern condenser mics, and their current popularity is sucking the...
