    Mics Mics Mics

Here's my 2 cents.. I'd agree with the purchase of a good quality condensor $250-300 dollars and spend the rest on a few used or discounted Shure SM57's or SM58's You will have a nice vocal and accoustic Condensor mike, and the Shure dynamics are industry standards for Drums and Electric...

I need a tip on fixing my 4 track

Open It Up It may be a spring popped off of the little plastic post, Take a look inside. The mechanism is fairly simple, the hardest part will be getting the case to close up again when you put it all back together. Everything must fit exactly back in place all at once. DOM

    D2424LV Questions

alas... it is the way of the future...(SIGH) Computers will eventually handle most if not all recording, but for now there are so many software, hardware, mixers, soundcards, and IO options, it's overwhelming! Prices are going down, speed, quality and disk storage is going up! Good luck, read...

Where do you like to start your mixdowns?

1st, Bass and drums hit the meters at about -20db. Add guitars keys etc and balance mix without lead vocal -5 to 0 db Add lead vocal with compression added to taste, also reverb delay and other effects. Eq total mix and dip into the red occasionally (Avoid distortion) *NOTE: Most digital...

HD format issues on a DMT8vl

You may have to switch the jumper positions! The "little plastic rectangle" that makes contact between two pins on the end of the hard drive.... Switch the jumpers around and try it, it cant hurt! Match the position of the jumpers on the original hard drive that works. DOM :)

    D2424LV Questions

I'll try to answer your questions.... I don't have the internal drive, I mix down to a stand alone CD recorder. There is no stereo output, you will need a 24 channel mixer to hear all the channels you record. The VU level meters are very good, and I have never heard distortion even when...

Simple question about 4 track recording...

So.... You will have to mix down your 4track master to a stereo recorder to be able to play your creations on a standard cassette. Dom :p

Simple question about 4 track recording...

You can't play 4 track tapes on a STEREO (2 track)!!! Your stereo cassette plays only 2 tracks in either direction, the 4 track uses the other two tracks as well. If you flip it over you will hear the other two parts BACKWARDS! Dom

    D-2424LV or Alesis HD24

My Vote is for the Fostex! It sounds great, and I love the detachable control panel. It has all the functions and controls including level meters and a punchin jack on the end of a 15 pin standard computer cable. You can extend it 20 or 30 ft or more? I just bring the control panel into the...

Why is the price for the D2424LV so low...

Wrong answer! The Fostex D2424LV allows you to record all 24 tracks at once! As to why it is cheaper? Fostex has been producing Multi-track recorders for about 40 years, while Alesis first came out with the ADAT's in the late 80's? I own two ADATs and have owned 3 Fostex Multi trackers...

Why so many devices with only two inputs?

A Short History Lesson.... Back in the early days of recording 1920-1930's everything was mono (ONE CHANNEL) usually recorded with just one microphone, so all the instruments had to be positioned at the correct distance from the mic to be balanced when recorded. As electronics improved, mixers...

    connecting Fostex D2424LV

You don't need any thing special! Just put the 2nd hard drive in the caddy and connect the ribbon cable and insert into the top slot. I have two caddys and swap them out all the time. You will however have to go to an authorized service center to install a second unit or DVD drive in the...

    connecting Fostex D2424LV

Fostex It will work either way, but insert cables are much more expensive than a simple 1/4" snake cable. I use 3, 8 channel snakes (24 tracks) Since I mostly only record a few tracks at a time, I simply use a tube MP, Joe meek or other Preamp module to feed a patch bay that is connected to the...

    mastering question...

OKAY here's a few ideas.... 1.Bring up the drum and bass tracks, set the balance between them and faders up to about -20 DB 2.Bring up Guitars Keys, etc all except lead vocal and watch meters so that they reach -5db to 0db, only occasionally dipping into red 3.Slowly bring up lead vocal until...

Mixing and Producing that professional sound

Listen then try... Quite often what is percieved as a "Professsional" sounding mix is: Highly Compressed mix (Like it sounds over the radio) Over accentuated Bass (Like a big subwoofer) Super Bright High end (12k-15K boost cymbals etc) My suggestion is to listen to one of you favorite...

learning about circuit diagrams and schematics

I hate to say it for fear of ridicule... but Radio Shack Radio shack has some simple books on electronics, showing diagrams, symbols simple projects wit a few transistors and IC's etc. My favorite is the "Engineers Notebook" it has some nice audio circuits that I have used. DOM :o

    Stereo vs Mono

Another oppinion I like to record at least one important track in true stereo (Like an accoustic guitar that will carry the rythym and chord progression of the song.) By "True stereo" I mean using two approx. equal distant matched high quality condensor mics. I then build the mix around this...

    allright but cheap?

Don't buy a guitar on EBAY! or any other Mail order way! You have to plug in a guitar, and hold it and see how it fits in your hands and on your lap/ shoulder how high the action is and how fat the neck is and the spacing between strings..... etc etc etc. Just my oppinion, DOM:eek:
