Do You have some $?
The inexpensive way (Relatively speaking)
1. Buy a patchcord with 1/4" to RCA plugs (stereo) and connect it to a stand alone Phillipps or Sony CD Recorder (About $300.00 to 400.00) Target, Sears, Walmart, Best Buy all have these everyday and sometimes on sale! Get a pack of...
Melodies of the night
Sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of the night with lyrics and I'll jot down a few lines so I wont forget them.
I have also heard a melody in a dream and woke up humming it, so I'll stumble downstairs to the studio and sing into a little cassette recorder that I use...
If you find a winner stick with it!
I have done quite a few album projects, and paid the price for "Professional" mastering a few times. All I can say is that sometimes it's really not worth it, if the facillity and engineer are not all that great.
If you do find a mastering house that does a...
Mix Mix MIX!
My first mix is almost never the final mix.
I'll burn a CD of the mixdown, and then "Live with it" for a while.
I drive around in the car and playback the CD at extreme volumes and then low as background music while commuting.
After a while little things show up: (Lead Guitar...
Of course you have tried swapping cables first?
1. Make sure that is just isn't a bad snake cable or input on your board.
2. If you are adventureous, open up the unit and look for signs of smoked components on the output channel circuitry.
3. Does the VU indicate a normal signal during play...
Just purchased a pair of Event PS5 Nearfield Monitors, and I like them a lot. They are small but quite powerful.
Anyone out there hear of a review of these speakers. They sound pretty balanced to me but I have nothing else to reference them too. Just stereo speakers.
Any of you guys use these...
Yeah, Building is fun and it's a creative thing too!
When ever I give someone a tour of the studio, or when a band first shows up for a session, I listen to their comments as they first walk in. I get a kick out of their ooh's and ahhs.
The interior lighting, woodworking and wall treatment...
Beheringer Composer Pro
I know there is a lot of anti-beheringer senitment out there, but I really love the final mixes I get through the "Composer Pro"
I compress the overall mix, raise the out put up pretty loud and set the limiter just to control the peaks.
You can get a very hot signal...
Electronics 201
Discrete is better for all of the above reasons, (Optimal Circuit design, Heat dissipation, and other sometimes nostalgic reasons).
But also for practical operational reasons, they can be tweeked, modified, repaired, biased etc. Whereas a chip is a throw away item!
Discrete...
Signal Chain.....
It's not just your mixer!
Look at your whole recording setup. (The signal chain)
If you overdrive any unit you will get distortion or "Clipping"
For example if you run a mic preamp, through a compressor then an effect unit from an aux send etc...
At every in and out you...
Basic Electronics 101

Sometimes I would like to start all over again. I am currently in my third "Home Studio" and I personally enjoyed the construction phase almost as much as making music.
Take lots of pictures, and keep us drooling....

I am still a Newbie in many areas...
Although I have many years of experience, I am still learning every time I plug in a Mic and bring up the fader. I believe this is one of the greatest attractions of home recording.
Each new song, each track, overdub or...
I was just wondering how many Christians are here on this BBS.
What do you do with your songs? Do you play concerts, or at churches? Do you record and sell CD's?
I am a "Bible Believing Christian" and I lead worship every Sunday at church. I Write songs about the Lord. I do this because I...
No Dimwit Dimmers?
I don't use dimmers, I just turn on and off banks of light to have more or less illumination.
The 12 volt lighting is a cool Idea! I have a few 12 volt strobes from an automobile application, and I have hooked them up to a doorbell switch so there is no bell sound to ruin a...
Take a few minutes and look at pictures of other studios,
Then sketch a diagram of where you would like to have your equipment positioned if you could.
Purchase some 1x12 pine boards and stain them a nice color and with a few drywall screws assemble your desk, shelves and racks.
For about...
Tell us about your studio lighting....
I removed all florescent light fixtures from my house...and
Replaced them with track lighting. Some banks are colored and some are white to change moods.
During vocal overdubs I keep it dark in the control room, just the glow of the equipment looks...
TASCAM TSR-8
TASCAM TSR-8 (reel to reel) is a great machine
You can find them used sometimes on ebay...
The older tascams (80-8, 3440 etc) maybe worth looking into if the heads have been replaced.
