As far as the SOUND goes, sheer presence and clarity and balance, the early recordings of Elvis Presley are remarkable, especially the sound they got on his voice, and that was in the mid-late 1050s. Heartbreak Hotel, Are You Lonesome Tonight, etc.. It would seem that there were microphones...

The versions you can download, I mean. Are they functional enough to allow you to decide which programme you prefer? Are they the same as the version you get bundled in an interface purchase? Thanks

I'm undecided whether to get a USB/Firewire interface with preamps, or a PCI card and then a separate preamp. From what I've read, I'd be able to get somewhat better sound from a good PCI card - say, an M Audiophile 192 oe Emu 1212M - and a DMP-3 preamp, than I would from an entry-level...

Sorry, I can't find that thread, so maybe it was not on SOS. It is certainly a problem that there aren't many reviews or discussions yet. Who wants to be the guinea pig? According to the review you quote, the sound is only slightly inferior to the 1212M, which is superior to most [all?] cards...

is that they don't have preamps, whereas entry-level USB and Firewire interfaces DO. There goes the price...... $100 + for a preamp..... It changes the whole price-comparison thing.
