The Mother of All "Which Computer Should I Buy" threads

""The computer's resources are used not in recording, but in mixing and in the use of effects; that's usually where an anemic rig will stumble. "" ""If you don't plan on doing a lot of tracks with tons of plugins and virtual instruments and things, you can get away with a "big box" computer...

    E-MU soundcards/interfaces

On another thread, brzilian referred to E-MU soundcards as not being the easiest to work with. Since I'm considering buying one - the 1212M - I'd appreciate any opinions about E-MU cards in general. Thank you.

Direct vs. micing a guitar amp

There's a school of thought that an electric guitar is half an instrument, and the amp is the other half. For example, there is no true "Les Paul" sound, since a Les Paul through a Super Reverb is rather different than a Les Paul through a Marshall Jubilee. There is no "pure" Les Paul sound...

Direct vs. micing a guitar amp

Thanks, SuicideNote. BTW, I'm thinking studio, the basic unit should do. ...and while I'm at it, I'll go out on a limb and guess that there are some people who can get a very good sound from a miced amp OR a modeller, if they wished, and other folks who can't get a really good sound from...

    Recording Software

I don't doubt the value of the Reaper software, but the name, the logo, and the fact that someone would choose it, just weirds me out. I don't want to look at that stuff while I'm working, so I won't, unfortunately. Music is the most positive thing going. I'd rather he named it Phart.

Direct vs. micing a guitar amp

Suicide, I'm new at this, so I searched "POD xt. " Will the $300 model do the job? Does the more expensive one just have more features, and are the basic sounds the same? Thanks very much.

Direct vs. micing a guitar amp

Yes, lots of "classic" guitar solos were recording at piant-peeling volume. Clapton: Bluesbreakers & Cream: Marshall at 10 in an isolation booth. Randall Elliott: Reelin' In The Years: Super Reverb "" "" "" "" Jimi: Half the stuff he recorded...

    Which mic preamp for E-MU 1212M ?

OK, the DMP3 looks very good. That would take me to $300 and a little bit. Maybe there is a $300 interface with preamps, making the DMP3 unnecessary................ or is it a really useful tool?

Direct vs. micing a guitar amp

Do any of you prefer to go direct, rather than micing an amp? [I'm doing my homework before assembling a DAW.] Can you get as good a sound directly? Thanks very much.

    Which mic preamp for E-MU 1212M ?

Guitar: both amp and direct, mostly amp. I currently own only one mic, an old AKG D 320 B. I hope to use real live guitar, you might say, and synth, midi, the electronic stuff, for as much of the rest of it as possible. Jeff Beck meets the Pet Shop Boys.

    Which mic preamp for E-MU 1212M ?

Well, the 1212M is about $150, so I'm thinking that there must be a preamp of similar style - not expensive, but not a piece of junk. I don't actually HAVE a budget as such.

    Which mic preamp for E-MU 1212M ?

I've pretty much decided on the interface, but it doesn't have any preamps. How much does one have to spend for a decent preamp? Any suggestions on particular models? Thank you.

    Why even mic your amp

Some of the more interesting guitar work in rock history was done by putting a sizeable Fender or Marshall amp in an isolation booth with a mic or two, and turning the amp up full blast. At that volume, good amps get pretty dynamic. DI won't cut that.
