you absolutely MUST read this article...

This is a bit of a "no-brainer". Dynamics are an integral part of the artisits "color palatte" when writing a song. Reducing the palette choices obviously reduces the artists ability to express himself through his music. It's like saying "write a song but without any notes above D" hmmm...

    Turning digital into analog?

ACOREC - interesting post. Tell me something, an old friend of mine gave me a Revox 2 track reel to reel(A77 or A80...I can't remember) the other day. Does this machine have the electronics to handle a hot enough signal to saturate the tapes without the circuit distortion? If so I might try it...

    Interesting Mic controversy

I just thought of something :) I'm a bit of a wine expert. The difference between a GREAT bottle and a pedestrian bottle is subtle. It takes years of training (tasting) to discern the difference. Once you have developed this taste the subtle differences become more obvious. HAving said that -...

    Neumann vs AKG

Imagine how you'd feel if you bought the tele m16 :D

    Neumann vs AKG

I have a tlm 127 and a 103 (got rid of the 103 actually) - two different beasts entirely inspite of what people think. I think Nuemann was trying to make a cheaper (transformerless) version of the U87 which ended up having a character of it's own. To give you an idea of sound I have a/b tracks...

    SRV's recording set up...

Yeah Harvy, I was just confirming you were right about the d130 - the rest of my post was a general statement - not directed at you, which we agree on anyhow.

    You've got it all backwards.

At the same time I'd like to add you don't need a "church" to have good acoustics. It's about dimensions and volume. The other issues can be treated/tamed to a very large degree.

    SRV's recording set up...

Yeah his vibroverb came with a D130 fer sure. My buddy has one of those...it's ok. Thing is, I believe that if SRV was playing an Ibanez through a peavy people would be collecting those items. Look, the guy plugged into a decent tube amp, threw a tube screamer 'cause those Jbl's are too stiff...

4 most most important things to do in the mixing process

I'm an newbie in recording but I've been getting excellent results with eq'ing. I have a very clear vision of what I want my band to sound like. I listen to recordings of other bands that I like to sound like and get a grasp of what is apealing to me - not really the polish of the recording but...

    SRV's recording set up...

MOst of the tone a prescence of SRV's sound come from (#1 of course himself) and #2 he used 12's for strings. Strings will make a bigger impact than anything else once your in the equipment realm discussing tone. But I'll say what I always hate reading from other people - people who knew him...

    Mixing guitars

The mic ain't bad - it just has more of a high boost than the Sm57. I would simply more the mic further away from the center of the cone - IE the closer to the center the brighter (and IMO mechanical) the sound gets. I used a tele into a marshall with a 835 about a month ago and had the mic...

I'm depressed - no magic snare bullet

I get a great snare sound from the c42's O/H's using the recorderman style BUT it's not ideal for a power rock styled snare sound that you hear alot of. Currently I have a maple snare on it but I'm going to dry a deeper chrome snare like a 6 1/2 inch Ludwig suprophonic and hopefully get more...

Mixing - stepping out of the box

YEah, but I'm kind of interested how the outboard mixing works with PT for eduational sake.

Mixing - stepping out of the box

Total green horn here but have a good ear and am a fast learner. Just starting home recording a few months back and am obsessed with soaking up as much information as possible. Where I'm at currently: Digi002, top of the line mics, TG2 pre, and a La-610 pre/comp. So far I'm finding the comp...

    Mixing secrets by sonusman

am i asking too much out of mastering

Honestly I wouldn't worry about this - make what you can and run, if your worried about your reputation, don't take jobs like this. The only thing that can possibly help this recording is to remove the vocals from the mix. Unfortunatley the music isn't strong enough to stand on it's own. She's...

What is all this rack gear?mor importantly why?

Chiming in here. You can cook a meal at home - a great meal, deserving to be on a menu in a fine restaurant. Can you cook 20 different great meals at home at the same time? Probably not. In music today, you can tailor a home studio to your needs and get a great sound. Perhaps not perfect, but...
