Direct conflict. Soundproofing is much more than hanging some fiberglass panels on the walls and putting a makeshift wall in the middle of a garage. For $3k, you could put together a soundproof booth, but a multi-room setup (and temporary!) on that budget is outside the realm of possibility...
Kinda-almost-sorta looks like a Beyerdynamic M130 in that it appears to be a bi-directional ribbon mic and has the same basic shape, but I've not seen a Beyerdynamic that has that sort of grille.
It's also similar in shape to the M-Audio "Luna" series, but again has a different grille.
Right-on. The Duet has two input channels that are switchable between XLR and 1/4", a pair of balanced 1/4" outputs to connect to your studio monitors, and a headphone jack.
Tina,
To clarify, you will need a preamp to pair with your new condenser mic (no matter which one you choose). In the...
Tina,
Both the NTK and NT1000 are great mics. The NTK specifically has its own power supply since it's a tube mic, and tube mics have different power requirements from most other condensers.
I'd hate to see you put down that much cash and not have a proper interface to get the most out of...
Focusrite all the way. Better pre's, plus you get dynamics. Make sure you know what options are installed - the OctoPre's don't come from the factory with ADAT cards; it's an upgrade option. The S/PDIF card in my TrakMaster was around $150.
Benny,
Odd, as this has been the norm for me for quite some time. Everybody seems to want the final product @ -3dB... I could see if I were contributing only a piece of someone else's production that they might want to do the leveling later, but I've yet to run across this in practice.
BTW...
Yes, we're describing the same thing in different ways. However, don't confuse a mixer's 1/4" inputs with inserts - these are different things. To tap a "direct out," you'd insert a patch cable to the first "click" on one of the insert channels of the mixer:
To your point, you'd get six...
And now for something completely different...
gecko,
Very nice. I really like that groove, and the sax sound is great.
Here's something completely different - way out in left field, but I still like it after 7 years. We recorded this sax in an old warehouse with concrete walls... used a...
Haha. ;) As it relates to 99% of music recordings, I agree with John here.
However, there are many instances where normalization of the audio file still applies. In voiceover work, nearly every client or post facility requires that a raw voice track is normalized to a "standard" volume level...
You want something that will output the individual mic pre's to the remaining inputs on the MOTU. You could do this with just about any good-quality mixer with inserts on the mic pre's or by looking at a multi-channel preamp unit.
A Mackie 1402-VLZ (or Pro) could do this from it's six pre's...
Oh, dear. :(
I'm not trying to sound unsupportive, but let me clarify a couple of things... First off, you "don't have money to buy mic's" yet you have $500 laying around for Logic??
No, singing into your computer's mic is not going to yield any results, and...
FWIW, I use an Apogee Duet and love it, especially the mic pre's. The breakout cable has little "joiners" that keep the cables from getting tangled, and they tuck neatly behind my desk, so all you see is the little grey box with the control button on top.
Aside from the convenience factor that...
Any reason you want to use a hardware mixer there? If you're on Logic, I assume you're using the software mixer at current... You might look at a control surface instead:

This might warrant a whole new thread on gates and expanders, but the basic principle is that a Gate is sort of like an audio-activated on/off switch. It shuts off the signal path until audio of a certain threshold is achieved, at which the audio path turns on.
An Expander is more like a...
Correct. Same principle as putting a baffle behind someone singing. Assuming most folks are using simple cardoid condenser or dynamic mics for guitar and voice recording, the reflection from the wall across the room (and behind the mic) is a small problem compared with noise that the mic might...
Actually, you might find the couch to be a great absorber. Sitting on the couch may control things much better.
In addition, I rigged up a couple rolling "gobo's" for my VO studio using nothing more than rolling garment racks from Target and a couple heavy packing blankets. Draped the...
Are you purchasing one of the pre-fab units from WhisperRoom or Vocalbooth.com? If so, best to use their treatment kits, which are designed specifically for their booths.
The ones I've used typically have uniform treatment across the walls, but thicker, more dense treatment in the corners...
Dave,
Welcome to the forum!
There is a fellow who posts Logic/Logic Express (they're essentially the same program; full Logic has a much bigger library and a few other goodies) Tip Podcasts on iTunes - it's a free subscription.
In iTunes, just search for Logic and pick the podcast called...
