    The ceiling's collapsing!

The kit's already in the corner, so I guess that's as close as it can get...same with the guitar amps and such. I'll try the underfelt idea (is that really what it's called? or is it just another name for felt?) and carpet. I can get a 5'x8' area rug from Home Depot pretty cheap.

    Reverb now or later

Most people say that you should apply all effects (with few/no exceptions) after it's all recorded, when you're mixing down. Just think about it...that reverb on the drums might sound good one day while recording, but what if you don't like it 3 days later? It's already recorded, you're stuck...

    The ceiling's collapsing!

Well this isn't good...my studio is upstairs in my house in an ex-bedroom, and apparently the ceiling below is starting to crack. I suspect the drums, namely the bass drum, as being the culpret, considering the large THUMP THUMP THUMPing will more likely cause cracks than a loud guitar. What can...

    Unhappy with my distortion

well the Valvestate is half solid state half tube apparently...although it only has one tube. I guess I'll have to try out some pedals to find that sound I want, starting with that Boss DS-1 or DS-2

    488 MKII ???

Tascam 688 Do yourself a favor and get a Tascam 688. It's much better and more powerful than the 488. The mixer is a ton better, and it has a nice little meter bridge, among other very great features. Just do a search for it on this BBS. It's great. I love mine, Prism loves his...

    kick mic?

ATM25 Do a search on the forum for both of those mics...many people say the D112 is more muddy. Recording Engineer (the moderator) prefers the ATM25. Hell, if it's cheaper and he likes it, get it. That's what I'm going for.

Dumb Question: What is Compression (as it pertains to Homerecording)

Yes, that would be the one I was talking about. You should not have a problem hooking it up using that mixer. You could either use the effects sends/returns for it, or do it directly in-line (Mic -> RNC -> Mixer). Most people say to wait until mixdown to add in such effects, so that would use...

    FAVORITE VOCALISTS!

I still think that Frank Black has one of the coolest voices in rock music, from his Pixies work to his solo work. His voice ranges from a low growl to high pitched.

    Repair-It Yourself

OK, so maybe refretting wasn't what I was looking for...or maybe it is...but what do I do when my frets are worn down in spots?

Everyone I've heard from says NOT to use such cables, and to use a transformer.

    Best Vocal Mic under $500?

4033 I guess the most popular around these parts for under $500 is the Audio Tecnica AT4033, for $350. Everyone agree? Just do a search on this forum for it.

    Distortion = Bad

I'd hate to cross post but this is prolly a more appropriate board to post this to. I use my computer to mix down to using a SB Live! Value card (older card) from a Tascam 688 8-track cassette recorder. My problem is that my levels can never get very high without distorting, especially low end...

    Recording Basics

Think Big First, you need good material to record. Got it? Alright. Next, you need good equipment to plug into that 4 track to get your ideas down. Start with a Shure SM57 or two. Got the SM57? Alright. Next, look into a good condensor mic. These will produce much better quality. Look into a...

    Repair-It Yourself

Is this a good idea? I'm rather good with tinkering with things...electronics and what not...taking stuff apart and putting it back together...fixing things myself. I'm looking to re-fret my guitar (Fender Jag-Stang), as the frets have worn down a lot, especially the G spot on most of the frets...

    Bad distortion!

I use my computer to mix down to using a SB Live! Value card (older card) from a Tascam 688 8-track cassette recorder. My problem is that my levels can never get very high without distorting, especially low end bass. All my song end up being much quieter than they should be. I have no problem...

    Yamaha PSR280?

Anyone have experience with these? I've played around on pianos before but never seriously, and never owned one. For the holiday season my work (CompUSA) is selling three models: PSR160, PSR260, PSR280. They run $70, $100, and $150 at cost. I figure I should pick one up for the studio cause I...
