    Traveling with Tascam 388

I second the backseat, but if you can't do that then I would wrap that thing in some blankets, and then lots of bubble wrap and make sure it's in a snug place where it won't slide around or have anything fall on it. I wouldn't worry too much about the bumps in the road but it's good to be as...

Tascam 688 play back too fast

The hum is normal. I hear it on mine as well. Before you do anything, have you checked the capstan belt? If that is loose then the motor won't move consistently. Temp changes affect rubber belts and will make a problem like your describing happen. Sometimes a belt will still look and feel good...

    Fostex 250 4-track channel pops

I've never seen one that actually works. The one I got looked like it'd never been used and even that one started up with issues after a little while. Still, the old Fostex stuff has a special place in my heart. Even my A8 with 7 working tracks and no rewind.

    Fostex 250 4-track channel pops

You ever look at a circuit board and see those little pill shaped things that are sticking up ll over the place? Those are capacitors. They are kind of like tiny batteries in a way. They are standard for the most part and the ones in the Fostex will be available to most techs who work on...

    Tascam porta 05 HS

The only place you're going to find that would be a parts deck off of eBay or Craigslist if you look constantly. You can find those pretty cheap when the sellers know they don't work and just want to get a couple bucks for them. I just looked on Craigslist here in NYC and there's aPorta 05 for...

234 VS 238 (tracks width effect on quality)?

I've compared my 244/246 machines with my 688 (which has the same transport as the 238) and to me there's a difference in both headroom and overall frequency response. The dropout issue is another legit worry when using 8-track cassette recorders, but it's not really a problem if you're using...

    Fostex 250 4-track channel pops

Yeah, this happened to me recently. I bought one of these a couple years back and it came in a Fostex road case that it had been in for most of it's life. When I first got it and used it it was working great. I neglected it for almost 9 months while recording on some other things and a couple...

I have acquired a 424mk3, and NAC has ceased making 771 cassettes...

One of the employees told me that they ran out of the shells they used for their chrome tapes and would be doing it again once they had them again. If yr in S Korea, how do you get them to ship to you? Anyways, if you can't wait or if by chance they don't come back, you should check out the...

New Recording The Masters 1/4" oxide problem

Missing what? I already know it's not the deck. This isn't a new machine. I wanted to know of anyone else had run into this issue with this particular manufacturer. Anyways, I finished the song on this roll of tape and then used another brand for the next number. Pretty bummed out because I'd...

New Recording The Masters 1/4" oxide problem

For what? Alignment? I did check the guides to make sure they weren't "shaving" the tape as it went by. I've been using this deck a lot more the last couple of months and haven't had this happen with the other rolls of tape so I'm pretty sure it's the tape but who knows. "Tape nowadays is super...

New Recording The Masters 1/4" oxide problem

I bought a new roll of the Recording The Masters tape to use for a recording and noticed it's leaving a lot of residue on the heads and pinch roller wheel. These pictures are from the second time I cleaned it today, and only after about an hour of use. The first time was even dirtier, but I...

    Tascam 488 MK 1 Question

Yeah, that is true, but I don't think expecting 4 pres on an 8-track is unruly expectation. Putting only two trim pots on the first cassette Portastudio ever released was a bad move, and one they must've learned from considering the next generation of it had 4 (with phantom power on two if I...

Fostex Model 80 - noise when tracking

I used this again today and it didn't make that noise at all. I degaussed the heads last night and had it running for two noise free hours. Weird. Let's hope it still does that tomorrow (today)

    Tascam 488 MK 1 Question

I never knew that. Why would they make an 8-track with only two mic pres? Those ART mic pres are pretty good for the price. I bought one a while back and switched the tube and it was night and day difference. They're not true tube pres but they do utilize them.

    RMT branded SM911 and SM900

    That's a serious drag. I've run into that on 1/4" 8-tracks.

    RMT branded SM911 and SM900

I've heard really good things about it over at Tapeheads.net. I bought a 7" reel of the LPR35 but haven't used it as my reel to reel has been giving me problems. Haven't heard anything negative.

Not sure about pinch roller Tascam 244

My money would be on the pinch roller for sure. Replacing it is kind of a pain on the 244, but you will be able to do it. That spring isn't something that flies off or anything. The actual replacement isn't that tough if you have some intuition about that kind of stuff. The Dr Zee site helped...

Recalibrating Cassette Format Portastudios to use Type I Normal Bias Tapes

For some of my own recordings, this recording style really gets the best performance and in the end I really hear a difference from a Pro Tools session. It's how I learned to record, so there will always be some magic in it for me. As far as biasing a cassette 8-track for type I, I think it...

Fostex Model 80 - noise when tracking

I will put an example up tomorrow. Best way I can describe it is that it makes really harsh and loud crackling sounds that swell up and then drop out as the tracks increase and decrease in volume. It definitely coincides with level of the tracks, so when the song gets louder the noise is more...
