common mistakes that make your tone suck.

Yup. I remember thinking WTF very well. Went to see them thinking no way they can do that live. Surprise, surprise... I saw them in August of '79 and they were all that.

Pardon me if I enjoy the very rare opportunity to correct you, El Tee. Still Alive and Well was written by Rick Derringer (can't find a date) and shows up on Roadwork - a live White Trash album released in 1972. I have it (or had it anyway). Johnny took the tune as the title cut for his 5th...

Edgar Winter's White Trash. Tough tune to tackle, James. Good start. Work to do but not bad. Wasn't Derringer playing a 335 then? Got access to a hollow body?

    Starter pedals?

lol - not blonde enough. I used the squawk on Sweet Emotion and It's My Life. I'd occasionally do some "alternative" leads with it as well. Those things are kinda fun,

Oooh ick. Not good.* * I don't mean that tone itself though I don't particularly care for it. If that's as clean as it gets you are severely limited.

    Starter pedals?

I think the question really needs two options; Live use or recording. At one point I had all kinds of pedals in my live rig but I started using Vox Valvetronix (1st series) amps and just used the onboard effects and amp modelling. I kept a Crybaby and talkbox in the rig and ditched everything...

I like that. I've always wondered how to get that twinned guitar sound. When the first Boston album came out it blew me away. I assume it's double tracking with octave harmony?

I did it once, on the floor with a pair of gloves when I was twenty years old. Took about twenty minutes. Didn't even disconnect the pups, just flipped them over on the body with a towel underneath. It was a 20th anny LPC Black Beauty and the gold was all corroded to shit. Don't think I'd bother...

Nice Clownburst. Color on the neck and back/sides must be a Custom thing. My Deluxe is natural there. The pickups are interesting as well. Shaws maybe? I've not seen any with the little indents before. Gotta love a Custom. Block inlay and split diamond goodness. Care to share pricing? I'd guess...
