I'm recording with an sm57 but it isn't very sensitive

I always think of the Preamp as Mic level. But you are right, adding +12 dB of gain on the Line In makes it a Preamp...I stand corrected. haha. Something funny too - on the PDF for the Omega, it doesn't show a 20 dB Pad, however, I have one right here and there is one for both mic inputs 1 and...

I'm recording with an sm57 but it isn't very sensitive

Originally, you said to run Line out of Preamp one into the input of preamp two. I think RAK and I understood it this way. Preamp means Mic input or Mic level. Line levels don't need preamps. You are correct Harvey, running line out of input one to line in of input two will not cause the...

    What does Hard Left mean?

Hard left would mean all the way to left to me. It also depends on what you are mixing and what sound you are looking for. As with anything with audio and mixing, there isn't a set rule that you have to follow. Sometimes, you can make up new rules.....

Rewire is giving me severe problems

This always a good idea to start troubleshooting by updating your drivers. Since it was recent, I would try the update first. But also, think about anything you changed between the two sessions. Any software you installed, uninstalled. Anything. It may be something small that changed on your...

I'm recording with an sm57 but it isn't very sensitive

I agree with this. It might not work out so well. Is there a PAD on your Lexicon interface? I have a Lexicon Omega sitting here, and I see a 20 dB pad on the back. I am wondering if that is the problem. The sm57 should be fine through that interface.

Rewire is giving me severe problems

That might cause the problem, although I am weary of that conclusion on because you say that alone this problem doesn't occur. Has it always happened? Or only recently? Have you installed, upgraded, or modified anything on the machine??

Rewire is giving me severe problems

When you have only one track of audio in Cubase and one device in Reason, does it do the same thing? Or only when you get to multiple tracks/devices?

Rewire is giving me severe problems

Hmm..I am not understanding fully what is happening then. I had a problem that I posted about one time with Reason(slave) and Pro Tools(master) causing static and clicking on playback. I found that disabling the Airport Card in my G5 removed this issue. I am not familiar with Windows OS as much...

Rewire is giving me severe problems

When you say severe lag, do you mean the two (cubase and reason) are not syncing correctly? Or is it just that when you push play it takes a while for the audio to playback?

Sorry about that, I forgot the 2. mBox2 is a good thing to look into.

    looking for usb interface

You are right RAK, but there are some interfaces that require more power than the FW bus can supply. As far as USB interfaces, I would look at the mBox, only because I am pretentious when it comes to Pro Tools. :)

Setting Up MacBook for Recording. Need Advice

I am not familiar with Logic Express or the MOTU 828, however, I am sure that both Apple and MOTU provide optimal settings for you to incorporate. I know with Pro Tools and Digidesign, there is a section on the website that tells you what to enable, disable and so on. I would look into this...

    Next Purchase?

I would get anoth mic dude. Start playing with placement and technique before buying other gear for your chain. I always opt for the mic purchase over anything else though. I think you can never have enough to choose from. Let me know what you decide.

    Mixing rap vocals with beat

I agree. It is a shame that a bunch of idoits post reponses like this. What's wrong with rap? I am not a rapper, but I have engineered many. I have also engineered a whole bunch of other kinds of music. Being pretentious and saying things like this just shows how narrow-minded some of you are...

How do you get peanut butter out of a mic?

Can you remove the grill and clean it out? Using maybe a q-tip and very little water? Don't use water if you can't remove the grill.

    compress during tracking??

I don't always use compression on the way in, but I do sometimes. Generally, I will put very very light compression on before going to track. This way, the change is minimal, and I can prevent clipping if the vocalist gets a little excited. Then, in mixing, if I choose to be tasteless I can...
