Where to use Shure SM58's in the studio

It's true. RAK and I sit very close to eachother here at Shure. We are good friends, and we are just playing with one and other. If you see us harping, it's because we have to give each other a hard time so we have something to talk about at lunch. For the record, I am smarter than Einstein.

Where to use Shure SM58's in the studio

I didn't say anything about being smarter than Einstein. Not even close. I was pointing out that he had problems with spelling. It is just like you to twist words. You have been pulling this stuff for 25 + years now. I have had about enough. And to "pick up" on this board is in reference to...

Microphone humming when connected to preamp- grounding problem?

If RAK knew anything he would have also pointed out that using an unshielded soundcard on a computer introduces noise into the audio chain. He is right about the cabling though. Good work RAK.

Where to use Shure SM58's in the studio

I hate you. Einstein had a problem with spelling too. And what is that comment about the the 57 not going around picking up instruments? We all know what pick up means you ass.

Where to use Shure SM58's in the studio

The SM58 and SM57 are very similar in design. You are right, you can unscrew the grill on a 58 to get it closer to a source (i.e. drums). However, if you look closely out the FQ response of the two mics, you will see a slight difference in the high end. There is a dip in the 58 around 7kHz -...

So what was your finding? I listened, but I would like to know what you think first.

does this mean i'm recording in 24 bits?

    Yep, that should do it.

Which one: Cubase or Pro Tools?

    Pro tools for sure.

    asio or wdm

Yep. ASIO is the way to go. I ran a test with an M-Audio mobile pre to test the round trip latency. With WDM it was 302 ms, with ASIO 41 ms, and with Apple CoreAudio 22 ms. Obviously, Apple rules on this one, but ASIO should treat you right in Windows.

    Protools LE bouncing/recording/playback problem

990 MB does seem like an odd number. You usually see 128, 256, 384, 512, 786 and so on...I wonder why it says that. On to your problem. So it happens with plug-ins too. Does it happen when only one track is there? Or just when multiple tracks are there? Also, what is the bus speed of your...

    Protools LE bouncing/recording/playback problem

This has happened to me in the past when I am using too many plug-ins for my system. Since upgrading to the 002 and a G5 I haven't encoutered this problem (yet). There are ways to still have effected tracks, but not use as many processor intense real time plug-ins. 1. How many plug-ins are...

    Masterlink OS Crash

Yeah dude, replace the drive. I have had this happen to me before with the Masterlink. One thing to know is that you can't use more than 32 gigs in a Masterlink. Not that you can't put a larger drive in there, but the OS won't read past 32 gigs. So make sure when you get a new drive you don't...

    Playback issues.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that changing from 24bit/44kHz to 24bit/96kHz caused this to occur. I would try to convert those tracks to 44kHZ, import them in a session at 24/44 and see if the problem still occurs. If it does NOT, you can trouble shoot why up-ing your sample rate made this...

I feel like im clogging this forum with bad q's

It says it right there dude. it doesn't run through the software. It is wiring the input directly to the output inside the box. It is all analog. The drivers allow you to enable it, but this is a feature of many boxes that don't require ASIO 2. Some boxes, like the mbox, are constantly running...

    Speaker hummin... hmmmm...

I think it is from the internal sound card. They generally generate about a 1 kHz tone with some minimal white noise. It is because they are not shielded correctly from the rest of the electronics inside the computer. If you listen closely, you can actaully hear the sound modulate/intensify when...

Upgrading from mbox to 002 Question...

Hey Konrad, Well, I am glad to see you considering the Apple approach. It is a very fun route to take. To answer your questions, Yes, G4's are OSX compatable. Pretty much anything after the blueberry G3 will run OSX, although not great. But a G4 (700 MHz +) will be just fine for you. At least...

SM57 With Lexicon Omega - Test

Since there was a thread about the SM57 not being sensitive enough with the Lexicon Lambda, RAK and I decided to take the 57 for a spin with the Lexicon Omega. Essentially, the Omega is same as the Lambda except the Lambda provides +44 dB gain while the Omega provides +50 dB of gain. With a...
