Sennheiser HD Pro280's are great and are very reasonably priced.

+1 I had one and it wasn't bad. Quality varies with budget insruments so whatever you chose, play a bunch of them.

Check out the Roland Cube amps. I got a used 30 watt for a little over $100 and love it!!! Very versitile.

I personally love My Sansamp Bass Driver. Great recording tool and excellent in front of any amp. You are able to get very tube like sounds. That said if you're looking for mainly distortion you might be better off with a MXR M80 Bass D.I. I've never used one but I'm told it's better for distortion.

I don't have any pawn shops in my area but I totally agree with checking out older peaveys!!! Look for the U.S models they're great values!!!

Elixers are great but cost too much. I like DR's alot. Personally I think they start to sound better as they age. I've tried Hi-Beams,Long Necks,Lo-Riders, and Fat Beams and have not been disapointed.
