    Individual drum isolation (tracking rock/metal)

My last recording project had a hard hitting drummer, dynamics all over the place. Mind you I learned a good deal about compression, limiting and track-bouncing riding a fader!

    which is better?

I'll second the minidisc 8 track. ADAT (not 'DAT,' by the way, which is a 2-track format) was great in its time, but the comparative 'software' robustness and speed of minidisc outweighs ADAT several times over. You'll also have an all-in-one machine, whereas an ADAT requires an outboard mixer...

    New to ADAt.. Tape question

Good advice. Can the excellent BRC be used with XT machines? If not, I'd stay with Blackfaces (x2) to keep the BRC option open. It's well worth having one of those.

So you aren't a big fan of that particular movie then?

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

I don't know why Titanic gets so much flak. Sure, it's a sappy story, but what a production job, and the concept of coming face-to-face with something set deep in your past is a mind boggling one. But then again, the final scene of City Lights gets me almost every time, too. Am I getting old...

It's still a valid (if not bulletproof) method. And stop winking at me.

I thought the good old sealed envelope with your songs, addressed to yourself, with date stamp (not opened until you're in the court room) worked just fine.

    New to ADAt.. Tape question

A single tape will give you about 42 minutes of 8 track recording, make regular backup copies (and even copies of b'ups), as the machine will almost certainly one day eat a tape and ruin it. You'll need one more unit of course to make backups. Adats are getting harder to put a price tag on...

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

Someone else said a similar thing, but added that if I increase my number of bits, I could use multi-channel compression. Awe, I give up. I'm starting to sound like that Walters guy from a while back.

Sounds like I'll need a TRS Y-connector for that, right? Should I go balanced or unbalanced, is it the tip or ring that should be Hot, and where does my sleeve come into it?

If it's the guy I'm thinking you are refering to, he also appears to have a rather unhealthy obsession with 'sticky' tape. But each to their own, I suppose!

The ULTIMATE Entry-Level Mic Pre Poll... :op

There's nothing to not like about it for the money. It's very quiet. Ugly little sod in my opinion, but solid controls, decent metering, and held together by enough screws and nuts to make changing the tube (as some people do) an even bigger waste of time than it already is. Out of the box, it...

What compression settings would you recommend for a 9am beer fart? I feel one coming on, and I'm standing in the control room.

    Gibson/Epiphone lies

I wanted to say something along similar lines, but I figured anyone using the derogatory term ("Jap") repeatedly has to be a bit of a disrespecting dick head in the first place, so saved my breath.

    Gibson/Epiphone lies

I think his point is that Japanese guitars (like their cars) are well built and perform great - if not better - than a lot of the more costly US stuff. Good example is the Yamaha version of the the eES330 - arguably a better guitar all-round than the 'real' thing. '59 Les Paul? Now that's...
