How many notes can you lift before it becomes plagiarism?

Hopefully, it teaches you to not expound on the law when you don't know much about it. It's generally a good idea to read through a thread before you post to it. I have gone to considerable pains in this thread to make sure that those who, like you, feel the need to hold forth on topics about...

How many notes can you lift before it becomes plagiarism?

But, apparently, not as a lawyer. Technically true. Definitely not true. I sue infringers all the time. "Typically" my client will pick the weakest and least funded infringer and I'll take the matter to verdict to make an example of them. Then, future cease-and-desist letters to other...

How many notes can you lift before it becomes plagiarism?

Yep. And that will be true, even if we just stick to discussing the law. Under the current law, it is. My objection to the current law is that it applies, not only to Christian music, but to non-dramatic secular music. Why should, for example, the estate of Woody Guthrie be required to make a...

Evolution is a scientific theory, not a religion. Religion <> science and science <> religion. Religions is predicated upon faith. Science is predicated upon observation, hypothesis, experimentation and validation. You might find interesting the recent detection of gravity waves that confirm...

How many notes can you lift before it becomes plagiarism?

There are a number of seminal cases in which churches were sued for infringement because they photocopied sheet music of hymns. I appreciate that it was said tongue in cheek. We need a smiley for that because, unfortunately, I've run into too many Christians (presumably not true Christians)...

    What's the best chord?

I know the name of this chord. It's "Jose." Congress changed the law in 1982 to require the presence of the chord in 179 registered songs unless the registration is held by Disney, in which case it only needs to be used in one animated film, and the protection is "forever, or the life of the...

Unfortunately, it requires more than 3 dimensions to diagram this chord so, unfortunately, there is no way I can do that here.

The headphone amp serves two purposes for me: (1) On a plane, my iPod has to be close to maximum volume to drive the phones, and (2) by keeping the volume low on the iPod, I can extend how long it will run before exhausting its battery. I fly to China roughly once a year -- that's a 16-1/2 hour...

Does anyone acctually write music anymore?

I'll write short sections by hand as reminders. For one of my projects, I compose on paper (actually on notation software). For another, I compose and record and might not notate anything. My "hand" is, for all intents an purposes, illegible to anyone else and barely legible to me. It...

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, or even the right website, for this, but I thought I'd give it a shot. It struck me that I'm probably not the only poster on HR that likes to carry their music with them. I spend a fair amount of time on airplanes, and I pass the time by listening to...

How many notes can you lift before it becomes plagiarism?

Oh, please. I would hope that a "true Christian," and any other rights owner, would take action to stop illegal infringement. That the infringement is by a church doesn't, nor shouldn't, absolve the church of liability. Copyright law exists as an incentive to creation -- without it, authors...

    Can lyrics influence behaviour ?

    (1) You have not committed copyright infringement -- this is certainly fair use commentary, and (2) attribution doesn't relieve you of copyright infringement liability; all it does it indicate that you intentionally infringed.
