Do you really need that many tracks ??

It all depends on what you're recording. I have a 7+ minute piece from a musical I'm writing that uses over 100 tracks. Could it have been done with less? Probably, using track automation, but why bother?

Putting up originals on here that are not copyrighted?

Then I'll clarify: No copyright lawyers in this thread have said that. :)

    Camcorder?

I don't know what you mean by "decent quality video." Just like you need a minimum level of gear to record an album, and couldn't do it properly on an iPad using the built-in microphone, you need a minimum level of gear to produce a video. Same level of gear, same level of technical skill.

Putting up originals on here that are not copyrighted?

I am usually the less-expensive lawyer and I've never lost a trial. No one has said that. What I said is that your work is protected by copyright as soon as it is fixed in a tangible medium. However, registration confers a number of advantages, not the least is a legal presumption of ownership...

Putting up originals on here that are not copyrighted?

I'm not sure what you mean about the law. The test for copyright infringement is objective and subjective similarity -- the former involves expert testimony, the latter is, more less, what you're saying.

Putting up originals on here that are not copyrighted?

It's an interesting story, but she got the law all wrong. I have no idea why she was sued (and, apparently, neither does she), but her descriptions of the legal standards and procedures are completely wrong.

    Camcorder?

Easy way to sync audio and video: Do what the pros do and get a slapper slate. In your video editor, line up the spike in the audio track from the "slap" sound with the frame in the video when the slate arm makes contact. You understand, don't you, that none of the approaches outlined here...

Putting up originals on here that are not copyrighted?

Oy. If you're in the United States, your works are protected by copyright as soon as they are "fixed in a tangible medium," which means putting them in some form of digital file. Registration is a pre-requisite for litigation and entitlement to statutory damages, but not to protection.

    Can my computer handle 96k?

Oy. There's really no way to tell. Different VSTs put different demands on the CPU. However, just how many tracks are you planning on using? If you have, for example, multiple tracks guitar tracks, rather than putting reverb on each track, put all the tracks into a single bus and reverb the...

    Can my computer handle 96k?

The limiting factor for tracks will not be your CPU or memory, but your effective spindle speed (SSDs don't have spindles, but you get what I mean). I have a similarly-equipped PC laptop. I mix and master in Adobe Audion 3.0 or CS6 (depending on the project). This is, to an extent, an Apple to...

    MIDI keyboard for pianist!

Just an observation: most countries outlaw the use of ivory. You won't find a new acoustic piano, much less a new MIDI keyboard, with ivory keys.

Do you consciously try to make your lyrics rhyme ?

My writing is for musical theater to, yes, it always rhymes and I abhor near-rhymes. I also try for internal rhymes, i.e. rhymes in the middle of one line that pair with its partner line, in addition to having the final word rhyme. I also keep my rhyme scheme consistent within the matching...

"Come and Get Them"--Epic Orchestral Piece

I'm afraid I don't agree. The East/West sample sets are amazing (and expensive) but there are others out there that are almost as good. It really depends more on skill set than the tools that you use, at least once you get beyond a 4-track cassette deck where you have to bounce tracks to build...

Legal question for a qualified publishing attorney.

The ones from the American rights administration entities are, I'm pretty sure, automatically generated. I've had a couple of those involving music I had licensed. The Indian one, though, I'm almost certain wasn't. Someone made a mistake, one that I would have pursued had I been monetizing...

Legal question for a qualified publishing attorney.

First, as I've outlined, the "reasonable person" test (which was misstated) is only one part of the analysis. Also, I know this was intended as a joke, but having been litigating copyright and trademark for around 25 years, I can tell you that, rather than simply dismissing both the law and the...

Legal question for a qualified publishing attorney.

I'm not quite sure what you mean here. The music of a song is protectable in copyright. The lyrics are separately protectable. A recording of the song is subject to separate copyright protection. A video of someone performing the song is separately protectable. Owning the physical master...

Legal question for a qualified publishing attorney.

That's not quite correct. "Topics" are not protectable in copyright, but storylines, i.e. stories, most certainly are. The legal rule of thumb for copyright is that you cannot protect ideas, but you can protect the expression of ideas. If the story is sufficiently specific and you copy it...

Legal question for a qualified publishing attorney.

I'm an intellectual property attorney. However, I cannot, and do not, give legal advice to non-clients (my malpractice carrier would not let me). That said, song titles are not protectable in copyright nor, generally, as trademarks (though there are exceptions). I recently had an issue with...
