    Turntable needles

FWIW, there are three major types of cartridges for audiophile turntables: Moving iron, moving magnet, and moving coil. All work by generating a (very tiny) voltage in coils by harnessing the "wiggle" in the actual needle caused by the undulations in the record's groove. Moving iron moves a...

    3M 996 Shed issue, revisited w/photo

 You are describing exactly what I am getting. But, does sticky shed diminish with each pass through the machine like this appears to do? Yes, it was a whole box of pancakes, each still in plastic, each still sealed with the 3M adhesive leader on it, never used. The box in question is...

    3M 996 Shed issue, revisited w/photo

Several months ago, I had posted a thread about what appeared to be like sticky shed I was having with a box of 996 pancakes that I bought. I had noted that there was mostly white crud and long, thread-like strings. Not the usual brown gunk. Have been very busy and haven't had time to mess...

    revox b77 - oh mercy!

The Revox tape decks are built like tanks, and, if it was working before you went poking around, I doubt that you did any harm to it. However, they are sort of modular tanks, and you may have disconnected something accidently. If I remember correctly, the transport switches or buttons are...

    front-loading turntables.......who's best?

I'll second what Ghost said. Also, what Technoplayer noted - make sure you can get to the controls from the front while it is playing. And I'll add a few opinions of my own: If you want the best sound and protection you can get for your vinyl, get the best turntable you can afford. While...

I didn't know Zonal was still in production.

    ATR Magnetics Website

Follow-up thought: I'm wondering if the big announcement of availability of production tape will come at TapeOpCon, June 16th. ATR does have a big spot for it on their own web site, and companies are known to annouce products at big events like that. We can but hope. Wow, think about it...

    ATR Magnetics Website

If you have not taken a look at ATR Magnetics' web site lately, maybe you would like what is going on there. The URL is www.nothingsoundsliketape.com They have fully redone the site and although most of the links to product info, tech info, etc. don't work yet, it is a good sign. The tech...

    from the ATR newsletter

+10! Do any of you know if the Revox (i.e. made by Studer), built-like-tanks, home machines are capable of being pushed to anywhere near this recording level without distorting? Can they make +6 dB or +9 dB? They are overbuilt to the hilt, even the all discrete components on their circuit...

    Tape for Revox PR99?

How about one of the Emtec tapes, back in production by RMG? Like SM911 or LPR 35 for now, and SM900 in a few weeks. From US Recording Media or any other RMG-I dealer. Cost is about the same as brand-Q tape.

Is this a sign of sticky shed on 3M 996?

Beck, The pancakes were in plastic, and in very good condition. The leaders on this batch of 996 were different from the last box: On the outside they had the 3M tartan/plaid thing, and only the slitting sequence number. At first I was suspicious. But, after peeling open a pancake, I found...

Is this a sign of sticky shed on 3M 996?

Here is the problem: I bought a case of 12 pancakes of new-old-stock 3M 996 tape. These are 2500' rolls of 1/4 inch tape on NAB hubs only, no flanges. The batch in question bears date codes indicating it was made in 1991. I just started winding it on to Polyline plastic reels by screwing...

Help-diagram Of Remote For Studer B67-help

Do you know if it might be the same as the remote control for the Revox (Studer) A77? If so, then I have the diagram. Otherwise, I'll keep my eyes open for one.

Cartridge align jig for Revox linear t-table

I might add that prior to my purchasing this turntable the bloody cart. mounting kits came up on eBay every once in a while. For reasonable prices. So sooner or later it is bound to happen again. Actually, I know who has one. There is a B791 on eBay right now, the one whose picture I swiped...

Cartridge align jig for Revox linear t-table

Ghost, Revox doesn't have those things anymore, and Revox isn't really the same Revox that it was back then. Studer sold off Revox, or something like that, a while back. One hell of a shame to see that happen. I've just sold two Revox PR 99s to a guy in Canada - for some reason those tape...

Cartridge align jig for Revox linear t-table

Top photo, a B791 with the Linatrack "arm" off to the side of the platter, in rest position. This shows the arm with the cover on it, which is normal. You can't see everything inside it. Bottom photo, a B795 (exactly the same ttable/arm, but without the vernier speed control the 791 has)...

Cartridge align jig for Revox linear t-table

The tonearm and headshell, if you can call these things that, are very proprietary. The shell does not come out of the tonearm, if this thing can even be said to have a tonearm for it to come out of. Sounds like you may not be familiar with the Revox B790/791/795 Linatrak turntables. If you...

Cartridge align jig for Revox linear t-table

Need to put a new cartridge in my Revox B791 Linatrack turntable, but don't have the Cartridge Alignment Kit. The only piece of the kit I really need is the plastic alignment jig that snaps on the tonearm (more accurately speaking, the tiny stub of a tone arm) and has alignment marks so you can...

Is this safe as hold-down tape?

Was in a pinch for hold-down tape, looking frantically around, but none anywhere in the house. Ventured into a room that I'm remodeling and eyes fell upon a pile of rolls of 3M "Painter's tape." The blue stuff that is not supposed to ruin painted surfaces and comes off clean. Ah Hah! Figured...

Cleaning dutsy mixing boards .. ?

I like using 3M Stainless Steel Cleaner for resto and clean up work on older electronics. It seems to be less harsh than cleaners like 409, etc. and cleans very well. I've never cleaned an old mixer, but several pieces of McIntosh Labs equipment (painted parts, never on the black glass)...
