    Hoorah new metalcore song

This is a Christian 'metal' band I'm doing a 10 song demo for. This is all likely to get recorded somewhere down the line when they can afford to get into a studio with me instead of my garage. There's no bass and we need to record their lead singer/screamer fellow but I'd like some opinions...

i thought it is best to record around -18dbfs

I just know that with my Firepod, when I track snare drums and let them excede an average -12db in, they start to slightly distort. I can push guitars to -5db average. Bass starts to distort hardcore if I approach -10db. I've run 1khz signals at varying volumes from different sources into my...

Pre for an SM7 or an RE-20?

I've always heard that the RE-20 has some crazy magic pop filter built in so that you can touch your lips to it and it won't pop. 6 inches away seems way too far. Get the girl right up on the mic and it'll be fine.

Mastered version of a band I recorded:

It almost sounds like there's no bass at all. It's really typical of this kind of metal to have a kind of light bottom end because the kick is going so fast at certain places, but this is excessive. Still sounds great though.

i thought it is best to record around -18dbfs

I record everything at -24dbfs unless it's pudding and then I don't pay attention and use all the gain I have. Pudding's quiet and it sounds good when it clips in digital.

    Firepod + pre-amp?

Cuse, I've never tried it with a Firepod so I don't know, but is the DMP3 an upgrade in sound quality vs. the pres in the Firepod? I've run the pres into good converters and GOOD pres into it but no low end preamp into the pod. Fuck yeah, now I'm a 'dedicated member'!

    Firepod + pre-amp?

I don't want to be the usurper here, but you're better off running the Firepod's pres into a better converter. It's really just a matter of running your chosen preamp into the line in as suggested. You'll be fine. But I've tried both ways, and if you're looking for an improvement, good pre...

Mastering, to master or not to master

Mastering is finalization before it all gets put down to whatever medium it's going to, nothing more! It shouldn't specifically include anything. My mastering process for tracks going onto MySpace is different than going onto Lightningmp3 for higher quality internet display and it goes way...

    AT4040 or AT4033???

I'd say to rent a pair of both for a day, mic up a drum kit and have someone sing, and see which you like better. I found both models on consignment at a local shoppe and I liked the 4040 better. IMHO though...CAD M177/M179s sound better. I like those better than Neuman U89s/U87s on vocals.

Hard Rock tune with me playing the Gretsch Renown Maples

I don't like the kick. Down with D112s! They make kicks sound like someone dribbling a basketball. It's otherwise pretty badass.

just finished an album (self mixed)

I think it's great. Very professional sounding, and the playing is good, but that lends to the professionalism. It sounds like video game music. I have to ask, have you had any problem sending tracks out to separate tracks from EZdrummer? I cannot get it to work for the life of me. I'm...

    Tips On Tracking Guitars

You've got the right idea. More guitars with less gain = thick awesomeness. That lead track, I'd try doing it with a different guitar/cab combo than the rhythm and go ahead and double it. Get as different a sound you can from the rhythm without losing focus on the tone you want. Be aware...

    What's limiting YOUR recordings??

I need monitors really, really bad, but until now I didn't have the mic compliment to record a 5 piece drum kit so I was focused elsewhere. There's nothing wrong with me and I'm glad. I know more about the converters in my Firepod than Presonus does. I can draw the frequency response of every...

My first attempt at drums : (

Not recording them of course! I am not a drummer. I do not play the drums. I am, however, very adaptable. I set up my friends kit (the heads are two years old or so and I suck at tuning) and played around with this, laid some guitar and bass over it using Amplitube 2. It's pretty cool. I...

    Quitting

This is my first year putting any real time, money and...More money into engineering. I've gotten offers to do albums for at least 6 independent bands at the end of the year into the next, I've started working with a local studio, I've gotten recognition in the community, but I'm still broke...

My first records in new studio

I listened to the first track. The overheads are really phasey. The vocals are too loud and uncontrolled. It's recorded cleanly though. It's sonically good; if you work on the mix, it'll come out great.
