    Essentials for home recording

You nailed it "It seems there is an Atlantic divide on this issue because the general advice over here is "no sub unless an integrated system and in an untreated room it will just make the response worse". I say get ALWAYS have a sub available no matter how shit the room is - treated...

Recording interface - $800 or less

Based on your input needs I think one of the following would be a great choice, and you would keep $500 or more in your pocket. PreSonus AudioBox 44VSL Focusrite Scarlet 6i6 Personally I am partial to the PreSonus. Questions about 'Higher end' / 'better preamps' are endlessly subjective, could...

    New BatsBrew Album - "Stay"

How is it going with promotion/sales? Curious how you move most of your stuff. Do you sell at gigs or anything like that?

Raw vocal eq far brighter than cd vocals--why is that?

So many ideas to play with * roll off the high end * use a foam cover * Put the mic over your head and sing up into it like the other guy said * Play with positioning * switch to a dynamic (for example SM7B - love the no hype vocals I get from that - or even a 58)

    Song Structuring..

One of the greatest bridges ever committed to tape intros with the line - "Bobby! Should I take 'em to the bridge?". The good bridges are out there. Maybe you were joking.

    I actually bought a Distressor

That's true - forgot that. FATSO plug is cool - but SOOO easy to overdo. Chuck

How to record Upright Piano (IDEAS, types of mics)

I stick a single large diaphragm up over my left shoulder on a boom and it works fine for me. Then again I like my piano sounds anything but pristine, and yes - I've used cell phone tracks in a mix. They can work fine for rock n roll piano.

Treating a small wooden cabin with slanting roof and weird bits

Do whatever it takes to get it set up to mix into the length instead of the width :-) Also try and keep your monitors 12" to 24" away the wall if possible.

Using Microsoft Wavetable Synth In Cakewalk X1 Producer

Fascinating. I just spent 1/2 an hour reading about V5 and their approach in SOS and another rag. Pure physical model, zero samples, who would have thought. Will have to check out the audio. Thanks for the tip

    Original Song For Mix Critique

4050 is one of my favorites. There are dozens and dozens of new cheap LDCs out there that no one ever seems to mention this mic anymore. The 4033 and 4050 are about the best values going. I've been using my 4033 continuously since 1994 - and on everything :-)

    Removing instrument noise

Is it possible it's just bothering you, but no one else would ever notice? IMO playing and singing at the same time makes for a better performance - so keep doing it. There's nothing wrong with some bleed, or some string noise in the context of a full mix.

A Few Stupid Questions about Recording with a Microphone and Room Treatment

In my experience a small, square room with low ceilings is going to sound boxy, crappy and probably have lots of odd reflections that will mess with the sound - though a dynamic shouldn't be too bad. Is it really important that no one hear you when you are recording? I can tell you that the mic...

Help me put it back together

Thanks guys. I think I figured out at least part of what is going on with the kick. I am using a floor stand with a round base and it is picking up the thud from the floor. I could hear my footsteps thud in the recording when I walked away from the drums. But yeah - the kick needs some...

Quick question folks. mono or stereo for recording vocals?

Here is my 2 cents. Picture anyone you have ever loved, respected or admired playing live. Odds are they are singing into a cheap dynamic mic. One mic, with their voice going into it. If you want to capture the sound of a performer in a space, and the space is important then use a stereo technique.

Mirror, Mirror, in the dark.. (Known as, Beppe)

Everything seems compressed within an inch of its life. The mix doesn't work well at all. When you describe a track with words like "an emotionally fueled track" it works against the posting. The track should speak for itself. I really like a couple of the lines - especially "the heros on my...

A Frosty jazzy Christmas guitar instrumental - mix opinions please!

I love the guitar tones. IMO the playing would really open up if you were working with a drummer. The guitar lines get kind of pat when paired with the canned drums. Too much stuff falling right on quarter notes. No problem with weird chord substitutions here :-)

Scarlett 2i4 or Presonus 22VSL? i cant decide

OOH OOH Pick Me! I have experience with both. The single coolest thing about the Presonus is the VSL mixer. You can have zero latency reverb, eq, compression in the cans while you record. No problems with lowest latency settings on my VAIO laptop, and the MIDI seems to work really well. I don't...

Adeles cover and critic in the mixing of the song

The strummed chords are recorded really well and sound great. The percussion on the guitar body is really distracting, off tempo and sounds bad. The single note runs with delay don't work.

    Original Song For Mix Critique

The solo acoustic (what is it - a dobro?) is pure money. The bass is sweet. The vocals sound good. I'm listening on cans so can't really deep critique. You didn't ask for comments on the song so I won't go there :-) Chuck
