Singer + Acoustic Guitar: How to comp/correct voice and guitar tracks afterward?

Don't agree with the advice at all. A great live performance acoustic and vocal shouldn't need any editing at all. Practice until you get it right. Vocal bleed isn't going to matter one bit of the performance is good. Chuck

Hey - I love The Third Man! I don't like the face crash either. I should have just walked right on by :-) Thanks for checking it out!

Singer + Acoustic Guitar: How to comp/correct voice and guitar tracks afterward?

See I go completely the other way. I say go with what you already know. You get a Much better performance when you play and sing at the same time. I can't imagine why you would need to comp either the guitar or vocal on an acoustic performance . Just practice until you can get a solid take, then...

Thanks ido. I am going to do some more car listens to see how I could approach the lower part differently. Probably set this aside for a bit and try and get another track going :-)

    The lost art of living

:-) I did play with the EQ on the vocal, both the loud and the soft parts. I am thinking I have a lot of comb filtering going on with the the vocals. Anyway - I was trying to get rid of the boxy sound and weirdness, and also the clicks and stuff in my throat and realize I went way too far with...

Cool, thanks for checking it out again! I remember that you have a reverbrocket, and yeah - I love the reverb and tremolo on the old amps. I go nuts for it (obviously :-). The one thing I can't believe I didn't do was bend that bottom note with the wammy though, huge missed opportunity... I...

Two things I can't believe you have a real hammond now, how did I not catch that... I remember talking about bass and distortion once. The pedal will always thin it out. It can work better if you blend a DI and the distortion so you can keep the fuzz without losing the meat.

It's the Jet J12 T reissue. Got it at the pawn shop for $200 back when there were still pawn shops around. The mic is about 2 feet away angled down to meet the angle of the amp which is angled up. I use the tremolo and verb on the amp. I've played around with it a lot over the years and...

    The lost art of living

I guess it is over the top, but I haven't figured out if it is too over the top (for me) :-) I will have to re-cut it if I do decide its too over the top cause 90% of that is the verb on the amp and the mic in the room. I will play around with some volume automation on the vocals. Thanks for...

something feels wrong about this track

If it's that consistent then it might be a problem with delay on audio tracks when recording. That used to happen on my setup.

Hey Rob - great suggestion!!! - I posted a new mix up top. I had totally forgotten that the ba ba ba stuff WAS a placeholder. So I hauled out the pumpkin gretsch and ampeg and had my way with it. Doubled the guitar line up an octave and panned slightly left and right. Tweaked the piano...

    Key

I started the last one off in f then moved it down to e flat and things only got worse. I was thinking about what greg said - and it is kind of funny - when I write a song on guitar I have absolutely no idea what key it is in. Piano I always do. Probably because of the way the instrument is laid...

Dude you kill me, awesome song. Reminds me of (in a good way) blur in their prime mixed with some white album era beatles and some kinks thrown on top. The organ is awesome. I don't really have any mix comments cause I am busy listening for the second time.

    Don't Take It So Hard....

Man the drums and bass sound great. I don't really have any nits. I would like to hear more room on the drums, but that is a personal thing. I am listening on cans - but I am pretty used to them by now. Guitars feel a little like they are floating on top, but damned if I have any advice cause I...

    Shallow Waters

OMG man. I love the drums, and the bass especially. Guitar work was pretty damn cool too. Great work. I am listening on cans but I can tell its a killer mix.

Budget DAW software recommendations for multi track recording

I've been using Studio One 3 Artist. I got mine free with an interface I bought. The retail is $99 I think. It definitely has level control for the input channels - but AFAIK that is a digital level control post converters so won't really help.

    Three Mic Drum Techniques?

I fall in with what Cmolena wrote. I am a total newb on drums, both in terms of recording and playing, and I have odd-ball taste in drums so take anything I say with a grain of salt. I either use a single overhead, or an overhead with a mic on the kick. +1 for Overhead placement is key...

    Key

OMG + 1. Every single time I ignore the reality of my range I set myself up for total failure and end up desperately trying to fix. I just never seem to learn. Most of the keys I gravitate towards on keys just SUCK for me, except Bb, which works out great :-)

Thanks for the feedback :-) After doing some car listens I realize the strings are criminally low, and I have a few ideas on how to flesh out the parts a little better. I am using Garritan Personal Orchestra, which I love the sounds on - but don't have a good handle on putting it in to practice...
