    Final CD and bit/sample rates?

I haven't noticed a difference recording between 16 and 24 bit but I usually record loud rock stuff so I don't know. Most of the plugins I have are 24 or 32 bit anyways, so it's going to be processing higher bits anyway. I'd rather just dither at the very end and not worry about it.

Noise from toms with no bottom head

Well that drum tone can work for modern music, listen to Copeland's In Motion or He Is Legend's Suck Out the Poison...they got a throwback sound on the toms even with huge snares and kicks. Anyways, is that what you want? That kind of Fleetwood Mac sound? If so, get some Moongel and stick a...

    Taylors vs Martins

I also dislike Taylors for the reasons stated above. Thin and whimpy sound. Most new Martins don't sound that great, but the ones that are a few years old tend to be my favorite acoustics. Full bodied but with the attack of the strings. My absolute favorite acoustics are rosewood back and...

Equipment VS Technique!!! Everyone Should Read

I keep learning that with the help of the guys here with experience. I still think the line is blurred with recording because it's harder to separate musicality with tonality. I can play a set of Pulse drums with B8 cymbals and rock the house because I've been playing drums for 20 years...

    remo fiberskyns?

+1,000,000 Bearing edges have more impact on your tuning than anything else on the kit. I didn't realize this until I got a custom snare with double 45's...had way more crack than any other drum I've had. Had double 45's on a full custom kit and they are WAY punchier with coated emperors than...

    Micing a Drum Kit w/ 4 Mics

Yes SM57 on the snare, your kick mic on the kick, and try and get a brighter pair of overhead mics if you're looking for a more aggressive sound. Shure SM81's would be a good choice. I've also liked AKG C414's, although I haven't used too many different large diaphragms for overheads. I do...

    Thinking of changing cymbals!

Check out www.saludacymbals.com if you don't have a ton of cash to spare for cymbals. I use them and love them, usually run about $100 for a crash/china and $125 for hihats or a ride. I think I paid roughly $550 for all my cymbals and I prefer them to Zildjians and Sabians. Wuhan S series...

    Thinking of changing cymbals!

Tonality of cymbals can make a pretty big difference...try some "warmer" cymbals like Zildjian A's or Zildjian K's. They will be maybe a hair quieter but won't have that piercing high end and ring like Z-style metal cymbals will have. One of my favorite cymbals was a 19" Zildjian A Medium...

The band broke up...gear splitting questions!!

Split between the eBay price and the new price, come up with a reasonable offer, they'll probably take it. If it's a few guys, it's probably only 10 or 20 bucks a piece that would make up the difference. I.e. let's say it went for $500 new and $350 on eBay. Four guys are involved, so each...

    Epi's So-Cal 50 Watt Head

The thing looks awesome, I'd love to hear responses. Haven't seen one at all. I've heard it's a bit of a clone of a Soldano style amp, probably a modded Marshall sound. That would be sweet :D

Well i FINALLY did it folks!! After all these years...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Geek Squad is only as good as the people who work there. I'm from Minneapolis, where the Geek Squad was started years before Best Buy bought them. Minneapolis is also where Best Buy was started and the corporate office is a mile from my house. So all...

Well i FINALLY did it folks!! After all these years...

I hear ya, and I've been a PC user forever and worked for Geek Squad, built PC's from the ground up, and love them, but I was having troubles with Sonar 5, crashing constantly with Sonar 6, screw it. I don't hate PC's by any stretch...I'm just looking forward to something different.

Sweet...I'm trying to get a MacBook soon. I'm really looking forward to ditching Windows and it's buggy software.

DIY Monitors - Yea or Nay?

Awesome, thanks for your input man. I'm REALLY liking Zaph's Seas L18/DBFCG27 design. I think a 7" driver would get low enough that I wouldn't need a sub. And the breakup node of the driver is high enough that it should be taken care of with the crossover (plus the notch filter). The only...

DIY Monitors - Yea or Nay?

Whew, I'm not nuts :D What about this design? I've got 7" Seas Excels in my car and they play LOW. I'm hearing bass down to 80 Hz, and I don't even have the door panels and Dynamat plugging the holes, meaning they're playing 80 Hz open air  These things will be about 2 to 3 feet away...

DIY Monitors - Yea or Nay?

No clue where this thread should go, but I'm considering building a pair of 2-way passive monitors due to my inability to find something I like for under $1000. I've got plenty of soldering and audio experience, and after noticing the poor quality of drivers in prosumer nearfields, I figure I...

how can this be made clearer?

Get a pop filter for your mic, maybe bring the vocals down a little bit, but you're 90% of the way there in my opinion, actually a really good mix. Are those live drums or samples? Oh, and yeah the snare is just a little thick, maybe take a bit out around 200-250 Hz or even as high as 700-800...

Mixes on my BX8's don't translate at all!

Hey Cool, thanks for the kind words! I'm a drummer first, but lately every band around here wants to play death metal and get signed...I've got a job and bills to pay, so I'm starting to fall into a mentor/producer role. I figure I may as well try this the right way. The Blue Sky's are cool...

Mixes on my BX8's don't translate at all!

No it looks like fabric around fiberglass and a light frame. You could hang it 1.5" from the wall if you wanted to.

    mix through a compressor?

Do you have the DVD? I've read a lot of what the man has written and he's got some great ideas. I'd love to pick that up sometime.
