    Stereo buss compressor

GearSlutz has been down ALL DAY, but seriously check out that thread link I posted. Specific attack and release times for the RComp on the 2-buss and validation from people who make money at this game who use and like it. The O.P. in that thread uses a colorful EQ plugin because it helps to...

Why not place your speakers like this...

With the help of the guys here, I've found that speaker stands and widening the speakers really helped with my mixes. I've got a pair of $30 computer speakers (single driver) on either side of my computer monitor for an A/B reference that I can use summed in mono as well. Optimally, I'd have...

Dynamic vocal - Sits in the mix

You mean it's getting stepped on by the acoustic? I'd probably compress both the acoustic and the vocals slightly so you can control the dynamics (probably don't need 30 dB of swing on them). maybe reducing up to 3 dB on each (possibly slightly more on the guitar). Something like a 1.5 to 2...

    Acoutic Nirvana vs Pitiful Budget

Yeah I got a $1200 Tacoma DR-20E off eBay for $325 BIN. Best eBay purchase ever, and possibly my favorite acoustic that I've played under $2000.

What type of computer do you use for recording?

Intel P4 3.0 GHz Northwood 1 GB Corsair TwinX DDR400 400 GB of hard drives GeForce 7800gs E-MU 1820 Just sold the PC (less the 1820) for $450...ordered new computer tonight, getting some of the stuff over the next month: 2.0 GHz MacBook Intel Duo Core 2 GB DDR2 533 (I think) 60 GB internal...

whats the best 4 track Drum technique?

Best acoustic sound, no budget, but free treatments? Money no object, I'd rent some time at a local studio with a big room, rent a pair of Neumann U87's, a pair of Shure SM81's, an SM57, transformerless SM57, Beyer M201, AKG 414, D112, Beta 52, RE20, and probably a dozen other mics and play...

Equipment VS Technique!!! Everyone Should Read

Well anybody with a good ear and willingness to sit down and learn how to record, engineer, mix could probably make a good recording. I'd like to think that with a Portastudio and a Quadraverb could make a good recording. Trick is, most people want to make GREAT recordings...and that requires...

    Home Audiophile Speakers for Mixing

I'd say from my recent monitor debaucle, that if you find a pair of speakers that sound to you like they're flat and revealing, use them if you like them and treat your room.

    Drums dynamic range

I'm a pretty consistent drummer, so I don't use limiters, but on another drummer with close mics, I'd use them in a heartbeat. I have like limiters on bassists who DI and can't play worth a damn. I usually use a compressor at 2 or 3 to 1 ratio to knock a couple dB's off the top on peaks on my...

Equipment VS Technique!!! Everyone Should Read

Because I can't stay away... Taking the musician/instrument analogy further, I started playing guitar just with an electric, no amp, no effects, just the guitar. Eventually I got an amp and then a distortion pedal. Down the road I added and removed effects, delay, chorus, channel switching...

Equipment VS Technique!!! Everyone Should Read

Or how about simplifying it to the musician and his instrument mentality; An instrument may limit the potential quality or inspire creativity. The musician will determine how much of that potential quality and creativity is utilized. In other words, Chris Lord Alge with a Tascam Portastudio...

    remo fiberskyns?

Hmm...well that sucks. I suppose it's good if you like the edge though. Well then I'd try coated Emperors then and Moongel pads if you still have to cut down some ring. Should keep the sustain. My kit has sharp edges and with coated Emperors tuned up high just sings but without the ring of...

    Final CD and bit/sample rates?

All I know is when I went down to 8 bit, there was a lot of noise and everything sounded grainy, not terrible, but not clear.

what mastering compressor do you use?

I don't have lots of cash so I use the Waves Renaissance from the Musicians Bundle. Works pretty well. I've tried the SSL 4000 bus comp and it was nice, a little more pump. I wouldn't get the SSL comp on its own, but if I were getting the SSL bundle I would probably use it over the...

    Final CD and bit/sample rates?

There I heard it! I dug up an old acoustic thing I recorded floating 32 bit, loaded a dither at 8 bit and BAM tons of hiss and noise. 16 bit a lot quieter, 24 bit the noise disappeared into the static of active monitors cranked all the way being fed a moderate level signal. Okay I'm not deaf :D

    Final CD and bit/sample rates?

Hah, that'd be it! The only things I've recorded lately are my old metalcore band and my old punk-ish band. I quit both of them because they'd never heard of "dynamics" :D My next project is an alt/emo band kind of like a bastard child of Something Corporate, Counting Crows, Copeland stuff...

    Final CD and bit/sample rates?

Using an EMU 1820 which technically is a Creative product but it should record at 24 bit. Probably #2 and #3 though. Lord knows my room is untreated and my monitors are forward in the mids like NS10's so it crowds the high end. And yes on #3 because even with my preamp gain down all the way...

    Core™2 quad-core processors

Yeah I'm barely maxing out my old Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with 1 gig of RAM...upgrading to a MacBook Core 2 Duo with 4 MB L2 cache which should theoretically have around twice the processing power, and I can't see maxing that out unless some MAJOR plugs come around. Heck, even with the Waves SSL...
