Whether you thought about it or not is pretty irrelevant because it's tough to get a new machine with a 32 bit system anymore. You would have had to requested Win Vista or older. Unless there's a 32 bit version of Win 7, which I don't think exists.
SSD drives are incredibly fast compared to a standard platter drive. So I would say to use it as your software drive with your OS and DAW as well as plugins. Because plugins are relatively small, 80 gigs should be plenty, as long as you save any VTSi sounds to the platter drive. Also, if you...
Import all your stereo mixes into a new, clean project. They can either be on individual tracks where you would use the typical channel fader to adjust the volume, or on one track where you would use gain envelopes to change the volume. (in Cubase you just click on the track and drag up or down...
Top dog MEs or just hacks? Maybe they like to hide behind their lack of skills. At least for me, I'd still be nervous about a client sitting in while I mix :o
I don't have a channel strip plug, and often I use the exact compressor and EQ on almost all of my tracks. Those are the basic Cubase 5 comp and a free parametric that I found a while ago (can't remember the name off the top of my head). I decided some time ago to stop with the free plugin hunt...
So little story just cause... Dave Pensado held a mix contest on his show. Hundreds of people entered and all the top three mixes sounds pretty phenomenal. he listened to every mix himself, and finally picked the winner. A couple weeks later he had a little interview segment with the winner and...
Idk man, It's just the way it is. CD players aren't able to read higher than 16 bits for whatever reason. There probably isn't a high enough demand from the consumer market to make new era players that would play higher bit rate files anyway; no one gives a damn about the quality of their tunes...
Thank you all for your help on this, really.
I did a couple test burns the other night with some different software. Imgburn does everything I need and played on all the players I tested. I can even do the required 2 seconds before the first track. It is redbook standard
Both of these articles are very worth your time if you insist on mixing with phones. I'm about to leave the country to live in Japan for a year. I have no choice but to go the phones route for the time being. These articles were enlightening and I plan to make good use of their advice.
Mixing...
Yeah, when I limit my tracks to get them to a decent listening level I set the ceiling at -0.3. Is that what you mean? Other than that, my master fader never goes above -8 or so.
Btw, maybe off topic... what is the standard "perceived volume level" of a typical rock master these days in dB?
Hey Mo, I was curious about Intersample stuff... If our DAWs can't tell us when we have intersample peaks that are clipping, what can tell us? Also, is it typical for an interface to NOT have an output meter? Mine doesn't.. It has an input meter, but I can't meter my DAW's output through it...
Cool article, and I think he's on to something. But, the current algorithms like Sound Check are not very good yet. For instance, I have one metal album that is RIDICULOUSLY loud. When a track from it comes on my iPod, I jump every single time. It's like my ears are gonna bleed. To listen to...
Hm, I can't say I know much about how those old records were tracked...
However, in the modern era, I think there are 2 main things to consider (assuming you're recording acoustic guitar/singer stuff?)
First, I think you hit the nail on the head with the energy of recording both at the same...
Really, All I want is to make some listenable CDs for the band, so they can copy and distribute. I don't plan to have anything at the professional level, but I surely don't want someone to get a copy that won't play somewhere.
After a bunch of research today, I think imgburn will write redbook...
