I suspect you figured this out already, but what I do is this:
1) create a MIDI track for the SoundCanvas. On it's inputs you should be able to select port and channel the Keystation is transmitting to : i.e., port 4, probably channel 1. If you cannot see hte keystation as availabel you will...
I no longer have a 1080, but I do have a 5080 - there should be a MIDI indicator led on the front right side of the 1080. That light should flash for each received midi event. If it is not flashing when you play notes on the s30, your s30 is not transmitting MIDI.
My first step would be to test...
I am sort of picky on keybeds for my workstations - I tend to favor the Fatar/Studiologic line. Would you be willing to consider a Studiologic controller and a module?
Um, you can't use a midi cable to record audio. I am not familiar with the Tascam, but I would suppose you'll to to run 1/4" cables from the main outs of the keyboard into 2 of the Tascam's inputs.
This. Again, the data is opaque to these transmission media. As Bobby said, USA and Firewire and both used for amny things outside of digital audio. the fact that they are data-agnostic is what originally allowed them to be employed for digital audio - as I recall neither were designed...

I did not get that he expected MIDI to transmit audio data. The only solution as I see it is to run a MID cable from the interface MIDI out to the SR18 MIDI in as well, assign it a port and have the DAW and the SR18 agree on a midi channel, and thus control the SR18 with the DAW. He can record...
If I understand you correctly, MIDI is widely used to do exactly what I think you want to do. However, the SR18 will never be a VST, it's the real thing VSTs are meant to emulate.
You are just looking at controlling the SR18 from REAPER, right?
What is "AI" in this context?
Both firewire and USB are transmission devices - neither do any processing of the data, in fact the data is opaque to these devices.
It does not - you're going to be limited by your RAM and the disk seek and bus transfer speeds. There will always be finite bandwidth; all the external hard drive does is offload the storage to another device allowing for more storage space and also offloading some of the disk controller...
I'm not convinced they can. And of course, you are assuming that these sound sources are for recording only - there are those of us who prefer a rack of modules for live performing. Furthermore, there is something very powerful in the hands-on immediacy of a workstation.
