    Compression question(s)...

Re: More info on output gain... As a simple rule, even though there are no rules, turn the output gain up to boost as many dB as the compressor reduces on the materials peaks. If you compress a bass for instance, and you set your compressor up to tame the peaks by, say 4dB. Turn the output...

DBX Compressors - Tom Cram, guys .. anyone ???

Hard and soft knee got nothing to do about the amount of compression if the signal isn't very near the theshold. The softknee compressor start earlier to make a smoother transition from uncompressed to compressed sound, which means that softknee actually compresses more than hardknee, even...

    HD24 newbie

There's no harddrive limit, but there is a limitaion on the number of songs per drive. 64 is the max, and calculating the "normal" song length to 3-5 mins, you''ll end up with the conclusion thats drives bigger than 120Gb or so will prolly be not worth it. I use 80Gb, and would consider 120Gb...

Do all microphones require a preamp?

There are also mics with digital outs (Beyer, Neumann), that won't need a preamp. In fact, you couldn't hook it up to one even if you wanted. With that said, the mic has a preamp built inside, so it depends on how you put it. You still don't need / can't use a preamp for it though.

    What falls faster?

Ok. Sounded to me like you've just bought them and regret it couse you saw them cheaper somewhere else. But hey, the money you lost was traded for all the use you got out of them, right?

    What falls faster?

Re: Stay Away From New Neumanns Who cares about what value they hold? If you're not gonna keep them, why did you buy them in the first place?

    First HD24 Issue

I've had a silimar problem with the HD24. I had a 80Gb Seagate Barracuda IV Drive with 23 songs on it. All of a sudden, there were only 2 left. The first and the second, and on top of that, they had changed places with eachother. The other songs were gone, but the "free space" counter showed as...

sometimes you dont have to use expensive mics.

That would mean George Martin is good, not the mike.

    cabinet miking

Center of the cone = brighter sound. Towards the edge = darker. Also try angling the mike for more variety in sound.

sometimes you dont have to use expensive mics.

"sometimes you dont have to use expensive mics. " Happy to hear that. Now we can all stop being afraid of using our SM57's.

What would you choose for drum overhead AKG1000s or OCT MC012?

I would use the MC-012's, if I had to choose between those mics. Otherwise, I'd chose my SM81's.

which MXL is like a TLM 103?

Sorry to disappoint you, but there are no $80 mic in the world that sounds like the Neumann TLM103. With that said, I heard that the MXL 990's shockmount fits the TLM103, so they're at least physically similar in some ways.

    The problem with Alan Hyatt

I don't know who is the biggest dick, but I do think that this thread is a bit disrespectful. I mean, Alan is a person too. Even if you guys think he's the crap, posting it all over a public forum is a bit overkill.... I don't know. Maybe I missed something. I feel that legal and private issues...

    Akg C-414

Thanks for the link. I was thinking of the C-414 as a utility condenser for my studio, so I guess I keep my eyes out for the B-ULS model. It sounds great.

why can't I master my own stuff?

Mastering is the bridge between your studio monitors and everyone else's hifi-systems. The goal is to adjust your 2-channel master in order to make it translate to all other systems, and maybe give it some extra punch at the same time. You can't do that efficiently on the very same monitors...
