Doc - that was the reaction I had when I used FlashGet for the first time. Pretty cool :)
Slack & Dingo - OK. I want to write plugins not because I think I can do a better job (cos I probably can't) but cos it looks like a bit of a challenge, and I'm always up for a coding challenge. I wrote...
If you are really serious about backing up - get a tape drive. Scheduled backups, decent backup software that actually backs up the selected protions of your system, OS backups, data only backups, and it is designed to run every night, rotating tapes etc.
The other options are really only for...
skweeks,
I agree that the return policies on software is abysmal. Up until about 2 years ago, it was almost impossible to get a refund for software that was dodgy. It's improved her is Oz, thanks to the consumer and competition watchdog, but I don't know what it's like over in the US.
One...
OK, this is not strictly computers and recording, but....
Are any of you out there having a crack at writing DirectX or VST plug-ins?
Cos I'm such a cheapskate, I thought why buy a plug in when you can make it? (It's this approach to life, which I inherited from my old man, that explains the...
Put a lightbulb in line with the speaker. Yeah it sounds stupid, but it works - as the volume increases (ie the power output increases), the voltage on the speaker line increases. As the voltage increases, the light bulb begins to glow, and the tungsten filament, as it glows, increases its...
Yup, it will work exellently as a starting card, but it's NOT a prosumer card, so there are limitations. That said, it should suit you to a T for the moment.
You maight want to get the DCoffset DX plugin to use if you are using a DirectX capable recording package, cos the cheaper soundcards...

CJWalker,
If you want to get rid of that huge hum you get with lights on dimmers, you need to isolate the circuits that the lights are on from the circuits that the audio gear is on.
I'm going to make a couple of assumptions here, mostly about how the power works in the USA. If you have three...
Hard drives are a touchy subject, cos everybody has fairly strong opinions on which brands are best.
Personally, the only brand I will buy now is IBM, cos I always seemed to have problems with every other brand.
That said, most other brands are quite reasonable, although Maxtor seems to have a...
Don't forget that many of these boards will support multiples in one computer ie. you can put three gadgetlabs 824's inot a computer for a total of 24 ins and outs. I'm not sure is the Aark card does it. The website will say.

Yeah, I think phono (which is what I've seen them referred to here) is an old term for those style plugs. I work in metric, so they are 3.5mm and 6.5mm plugs, not 1/4 and 1/8" :).
The 3.5mm (1/8") plugs are also known as miniplugs, although I think that's the american term. the 6.6mm ones are...
Nope, got a legit version of n-Track (and may I say, have downloaded four updates since I bought it a month or two ago - go Flavio). Prior to that, used only demos (and yes, could get any software package I wanted to for free and tested the software by using the 'real' version).

Dingo, indeedily-doodily, one day, when the time is right and the wallet full, yea, verily, I shalt venture forth into the bravest of digital worlds, and get myself a real soundcard. As to what one, I know not. Til such day, yon SBLive shalt be sufficent.
(Man, I'm tired....)

A preamp is a device that is pre (before) the amp(lifier). Basically, it's purpose it to take the signal from a mic or some other source, and change it to a 'line-level' level signal. Technically, this generally means changing the impedance of the signal, and the voltage amplitude of the signal...
Nothing like a good slanging match to keep me laughing. Keep going guys - it's very entertaining having everybody slagging each other off. Makes me proud....
Anyway, about the cable. I'm a bit skeptical, particularly based on the shite that the monster site spins. Have a look at the belden site...
The PCI and ISA slots hold the add-on cards like video cars, sound cards, network cards etc. The hard drives, CD-ROMS plug into the IDE sockets (or of they are SCSI, into the SCSI bus).
Basically, ISA is old, PCI is new, and there is another one called AGP which is specifically from graphics...
