It's basically a buzzword. The rule of thumb for standalone/host-based is that if the device is capable of performing only one basic function, or set of inter-related functions, then its a standalone DAW. Anything else is probably a computer-based workstation.

Talk to me Coop,
Is it gonna be cheaper to get it sent through Sydney or Melbourne (being substanitially closer to the US), and then using AusPost to pass it on to you in Perth? Or won't it make much difference (probably not a lot of difference, but at some point a package is going to have to...
One more thing.
You might need some dribble about intellectual property rights (ie. copyright) of the work remaining with the member concerned. Also some sort of indemnification (is that a word?) regarding the originality of the work, which should cover your arse regarding the Vanilla Ice-Queen...
Slack,
I've looked at i.doc. It looks OK (mind you, I'm not a lawyer, so my opinion doesn't mean much). A couple of comments:
Typo in Section 1 - missing and 'e' in Homerecording.comp
I pulled the next block of text from a standard contract I use - it is just and interpretation clause, and is...
Pick it up and shake it. If it goes "sproing", then it's a reverb coil. Always handy little things. Having RCA's in both ends means you can do funky things with it - like running your car radio through for some cool effects (try going down a bumpy road)...

I was the one whinging about the Maxtor drives. I had a few fail hopelessly on me, but I have to admit that I do have a couple of them running at the moment, and no problems. I may have just got a bad lot.
Still prefer IBM drives.

If you want to backup, there are better options than a CD - like tape, or high capacity magneto-optical drives liek the orb. just not sure what the dat alife is like.
There are a heap of different coloured "book" formats = redbook, yellow, blue, orange, white etc. They are basically different...
OK, som I don't play in a band, can't sing, and don't write particulalry good songs. But even if I could, I still don't think I'd want to deal wit hthe big four record companies.
Have a read of this article - it's a speech given by Courtney Love at the Digital Hollywood online conference. Very...
Headphone level isn't line level, so you need to be a bit careful, cos depending on the CD-ROM, it might be possible to pass too high a level to the sound card. I don't know a whole lot about the Delta 44, so I'm not sure if looping it like that is going screw things royally or noot. If the...
What? nobody's mentioned the Commodore 64? But it's the ultimate in DAW.
Actually. there was a good thread on this topic about a month ago, which was quite well balanced and extensive, but I think the site search is still kaput, so I can't locate it. Dragon's promising to change to a database...
I've had a similar problem, 'cept mine was due to the fact that the computer was pretty slow. It becomes a major problem when you're playing back one track and recording another. The lag time I was getting was close to 4-5 seconds, which is horrible.
Solution: get a faster computer (it worked...
So the fix would be to dump a second soundcard, like and SB, into the machine, and hook the CD up to that. Then add a small speaker source switchbox, and you're done.

Coop,
go get 'em :D. I've been tossing up building a tube amp for a while. I've built some solid state amps before (it's all I actually have for amping guitar, and they aren't brilliant, but they work most ofthe time), but if you want to have some one a bit more "local" - and I use that in the...
Have you had a look to make sure you've got that file? It should be in either the directory you installed the s/w in, or more likely, in the C:\windows\system32 (fro Win95) or c:\Winnt\system23 (fro WinNT). Not sure where it would be on Win2000.
Also, there are probably updated...
Ok, I'm coming in a bit late here, but what's your OS? Win95 is pretty unstable, 98 is better but still buggy. NT is reasonable, especially if you're running a dedicated audo system, but let's just say that it's not 100% perfect. I haven't tested Win2000 extensively, and not using audio software...
Th other way I've seen mentioned is to get a bank safe deposit box (the type that requires two keys - yours and the person at the bank. you're better off not opening the box at all, but if you have to, use a stat. dec. that the bank employee signs whenever you add or remove something from the...
If you're serious and a bit richer, lexmark and HP both produce a printer that prints directly onto the top of a CD. Can't remember the models though - try their websites
