    Strange dreamwriting experience

This has happened to me...full arrangements of unwritten songs playing in my head while I'm asleep...but the details of the dream (and thus the song) always fade within seconds of waking... Darn brain. :(

Poll: Most Overrated Guitar Player OAT

My goodness, things are getting a bit touchy here. First of all, Jimmy Vaughan is not overrated. He's not that great, but I've never heard anyone rate him highly. He's pretty much rated exactly where he should be. I'd say...Kurt Cobain. I love Kurt, but as a guitarist? Naaaaaaaah. Good but not...

My songs are way too short.

I pretty much agree. Don't force a song to be long. If it's short, it's short. Long can be good, if that's the nature of the song. It's a Zen thing.

Which comes first, the music or the lyrics?

I totally get this. It usually happens during/after a long shower/walk. If I sit down and TRY to write, I fail 99% of the time.

Which comes first, the music or the lyrics?

I'm really surprised by poll. I write my lyrics first 90% of time. Usually, a melody begins to form as I'm in the midst of writing. From the lyrics comes rhythm, from rhythm melody, and from melody chord changes. Trying to cram lyrics into a predefined melody, or a melody into predefined...

    Song Structuring..

I agree. Let the lyrics flow. Let the structure come. Not to say that there shouldn't BE structure. But it doesn't have to be V/C/V/B/C or A/A/B/A. But it could be. Hmm, looking through my book o' lyrics, most of my songs ARE in fact V/C/V/B/C or A/A/B/A. Interesting. :p

    Do Lyrics Even Matter?

Lyrics have meaning But more to the point Is the music redeeming When you're smoking a joint? But really, illicit drugs aside, I like lyrics that capture a specific emotion or experience of the artist. Heavy-handed, moralistic, thou-shalt-not lyrics turn me off big-time. Specific > vague...

Do You Like (Or Hate) Your Voice?

Wow, this thread has been going for a long time! It's a good one, so I'll chime in. I love the timbre of my voice. My biggest struggle is forgetting that people are listening or a mic is recording and just DOING it. In the past, I've striven to MAKE my voice sound a certain way. Now I know I...

My friend swears vocal range is a myth

I'm an amateur, but this is what I'm finding. Everyone is born with a certain range. That's life. You can expand your range with lessons/practice, but you won't become a tenor if you're born a bass. Sorry. So embrace your natural range and make the most of it. When it comes to accurately...

Best audio interface for recording vocal + acoustic guitar simultaneously

I have a question about the Fast Track Ultra. I use Windows 7 64-bit. An unsettlingly large number of consumers with Windows Vista and Windows 7 report online (in Amazon reviews, M-Audio boards, and elsewhere) that they have experienced driver issues that render the Fast Track unusable or a...

Budget vocal mic: Rode NT1-A or MXL v67g?

I'm a vocalist+acoustic guitarist new to home recording. I'm looking for a cheap large-diaphragm condenser mic to lay down some crisp, clean vocal tracks. My budget is ~$200. After scouring the web for I-don't-know-how-many-hours, two mics keep rearing their heads: the Rode NT1-A (~$200), and...

Best audio interface for recording vocal + acoustic guitar simultaneously

Hey all. I'm a singer/songwriter new to home recording. I've been doing some research, and I'm ready to buy a few mics and an audio interface. I'll leave the mics to a separate post. I'm here to ask about the audio interface. I will be using this interface primarily to record one vocalist and...
