    Ableton....

An electronic music-producing friend demoed Ableton for me on Thursday and my jaw dropped. I need this program!

    do lyrics REALLY matter?

Hear, hear, Grim! Excellent post. You can only gain so much by analyzing a work of music in terms of just one factor - lyrics, melody, harmony, rhythm, or arrangement. What really matters is how it all comes together to make the listener feel something. It's possible and probable for a great...

    do lyrics REALLY matter?

NPZ! Whenever I went on high school jazz band trips, my motel room buddies and I would declare our room an NPZ (No Pants Zone) by shouting "NPZ! NPZ!!" loudly and repeatedly at anyone who entered (whilst wearing only boxers, of course). Girls rarely came to our room....of course, there WERE only...

    Coughing while singing...

I rarely have problems with itchy throat/coughing while singing normally, but whenever I try to sing Dimmu Borgir (~once every 6 months), I'm gasping for breath after 5 minutes. I think my death grunt technique needs some work.

Check out this poll!!! Epiphone or squire?

I think a lot of people's opinions on this subject are just formed from hearsay and predetermined bias. I didn't like the Squier Strat I tried. But I can't comment on Squier guitars in general. I've had good experiences with Epiphone, so I voted for that. There are most likely worthwhile...

Best audio interface for recording vocal + acoustic guitar simultaneously

Eborej, the Fast Track Ultra works wonderfully with Reaper on Windows 7 64-bit, as long as you use the newest drivers from M-Audio's website and chuck that included CD in the bin. I haven't tested it with Pro Tools, but I'm liking Reaper so much that I may not buy PT anytime soon.

Windows 7 64-bit - any lower-cost audio interfaces known to work well?

Just got my Fast Track Ultra up and running. It works like a charm with Windows 7 64-bit. Just make sure you use the newest drivers from M-Audio's website. :drunk:

Things you didn't know you didn't know

Man, I tried to use fingerpicks a few times, and even the largest size hurts the hell out of my fingers. Maybe I had 'em on backwards too.

What was your guitar/bass epiphany ?

You know, the whole 6- and 12- String Guitar LP is AMAZING. God damn, his playing makes me cry and dance at the same time. "The Driving of the Year Nail" is an astonishing tune as well. And "Ojo". And all of 'em.

What was your guitar/bass epiphany ?

For acoustic guitar, my moment was hearing "Vaseline Machine Gun" by Leo Kottke at age 12. After a childhood of country music and oldies, it opened up my eyes and my love of guitar. I hadn't yet started playing, and it cemented my desire to take it up. I spent the next year begging my parents...

    do lyrics REALLY matter?

Lyrics DO really matter. Just not to Mr. Kravitz. He tends to....how do I say....KNEE-JERK them.

monitors vs laptop speakers - take a listen

My laptop has "JBL SRS Premium Sound" speakers (lollerskates), and on almost any recording with loud bass, they buzz so much I'm afraid they might catch on fire. For some reason, electropop/rap/r&b recordings from about 2006 on sound just fine. Maybe engineers have begun to take powerful but...
