I use hit point detection in cubase all the time. It's simple and precise not sure what you're talking about.

I belove there's a button in hit point editor that says creat midi notes from hit points. Then chose which note is snare in your drum sampler of choice and create.

Just checked in Cubase Studio 5 (I don't have the full cubase 5) but it has hitpoint detection as well, edit the snare waveform then on under hitpoint change the sensitivity to only get snare hits and export as midi and BAM you have triggered midi notes for ehatever your favorite drum program is.
