ecktronic, I hadnt listened to the song on your signature. It is absolutely great! Arrangement, lyrics and production are all really good. Hope I can do something like that some day. BTW, I see you live in Glasgow, which is one of the coolest cities ive been to

    What's my recording missing?

So dumb, I uploaded the same track twice. Ill upload the double tracked one and post it here. Any suggestions on how to keep that defined sound I a getting closer to but have some of the dirt on the previous recordings? Cheers

    Ribbon Mics. MXL R144?

Thanks Xdrummer, your case is similar to mine as Ive never tried a ribbon mic. So I guess Ill go for the R144, it seems a decent place to start. I dont really record heavy distorted cabs, always clean or with slight overdrive, so I think this mic will suit my needs. I will probably use it along...

    Ribbon Mics. MXL R144?

Do you think the preamps in my tascam us144 would do it? I record my condenser mic at half the pre's level and have very good results that way. My mic starts clipping when level is at about 2 o'clock

    What's my recording missing?

Here are my results from yesterdays session. There is no eq or compression, I want to get the right recording first. One of the tracks is double tracked, the other isnt. Tell me what you think about them I think the sound is more detailed, with more highs. But I think I lost some of the dirt...

    Ribbon Mics. MXL R144?

Thanks for your repplies! It seems like ribbons get lots of love here. Ill deffinitely be trying one soon. Ive been struggling with my guitar tone and something tells me a ribbon mic is the answer. Moresound, actually all mics I own are used :D I always keep an eye on ebay, some very good...

    Are these good mixing/recording headphones?

While I think what you have said about mixing with headphones is absolutely true, the guy asked for the quality of those headphones as recording/mixing gear. As you said it would be very hard to mix with headphones, but how about the recording part? Do they have good isolation? Would they do the...

    New SHORT sample!!

The bass adds some body to the track, which is great, but I still think there is a lot happening in the low freq. I agree with what you said, bass sounds like pitch shifted guitar. And again, great guitar tone, it fits the riff very well

    What's my recording missing?

Im using a TASCAM us144 audio interface. Ill try to record a sample today with different amp settings and mic positions. I think the backing track idea is pretty good, Ill try that! Will be posting results here soon

    Ribbon Mics. MXL R144?

This is kind of two posts in one (?) First, Ive never had a ribbon mic and Im curious about them. I would like to know what ribbon mics do you guys use and what do you use them for. Theyre known for being quite dark and colouring the sound, so I guess you should use them wisely for specific...

    What's my recording missing?

Thanks Track Rat, I apreciate your feedback. Yeah, I think it wont fit very well in a mix with bass and drums. What would you suggest to get a sound with more highs but still keep the dirt and darkness in the sound?

    New SHORT sample!!

I agree, the guitar tone is actually very good, I like it, but it sounds muddy in the mix. The bass cannot really be heard, its sound gets lost with the guitar. But you have a really interesting project here. Keep it up and let me know when you post some new clips.

    Replace my actual mic

Nothing here to add, both have nailed it. I would say you need to get a good sounding room, without that theres no way your recordings will improve. One you do it you will find a big difference and perhaps you will stop thinking about a new mic. If you want to step up get an audio interface...

    What's my recording missing?

Yeah, i had been thinking about that. Today ill try different techniques and hope i can finally nail it :D ill try to capture more high end so it is more detailed and fits better in a mix but without loosing some of its muddyness, which is what i want for this song. Ill upload my results so you...

Room mic vs applying a Room reverb

Yes, I checked the article, it was very helpful. So basically their all the same mic right? (well, 2 different kinds of mic) But is there any entry level mic that doesnt follow in those 2 categories?
