    analog to digital problem

Miroslav seems to understand most of the process. However, you don't need any sort of click track reference at the beginning of a recording because with this method, no matter what you are recording or at what time you are recording it, all the tracks will be delayed by the same amount. So once...

    analog to digital problem

Yes you can, the method is exactly the same as recording straight to the DAW (through an analog mixer) only you are 'passing' audio through the tape and hence the 100ms or so delay.

    analog to digital problem

Yep, if you feed the DAW output into your outboard mixer then plug in your microphone that you are recording into the mixer as well then you can hear them both 'in time'. Then you just send the microphone that you are recording through the aux buss into the reel to reel recorder, set it in...

    analog to digital problem

Yep that's correct. Actually, come to think of it, with the 80-8 and CD-RW700 setup... this method wouldn't be practical because I don't think you can playback recorded tracks on the CD-RW700 whilst recording new ones. Worked great for me using a Tascam 32 and a Roland VS-1680. I think you...

    analog to digital problem

Yes this happens with all tape machines, because you are playing back each track separately, that would mean that the machine would have to playback at EXACTLY the same speed each time and this is impossible due to the mechanical nature of the machine. There is nothing wrong with your machine...

    Tape Editing (the eagles)

I have seen them live a couple of times, but I see what you mean. In their case I was actually meant that the band recorded everything live in one room straight to tape then Anthony would overdub the vocals but actually.... JIM SCOTT: Recording Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californications A...

    Tape Editing (the eagles)

Recent albums by popular bands that have been recorded 'live' in one room all playing together to tape and with only a few overdubs: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (1999) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium (2006) Red Hot Chili Peppers - I'm With You (2011) Radiohead - In Rainbows...

Learning mix down in an interesting way

Ideally, you could do 3 or 4 separate mix downs and let the client pick the one they want. Maybe for one or two of them follow the clients 'instructions' and the other two can be what the producer or engineer thinks sounds best.

Look what my wife got me today :) Hee-hee...

Or there is just a lot of them on sale, hence the cheaper price. But really, I won't comment on the suitability of using the Sony recorder as I have no direct experience with one but I can vouch for the 22-2 and 32 as great sounding and reliable 2 track decks with lots of spare parts still...

Which Reel to Reel Recorder is Right for Me?

To my knowledge, the Tascam TSR-8 would be the newest 8 track recorder on 1/2" tape that Tascam made. I don't own one but it gets a lot of praise on this forum. I would recommend thus recorder if you aren't bothered by the fact that its a two-head machine.

    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

Compared to the price of 2" tape, that 2" head assembly is a bargain. If you can't afford to pay $300 for the heads then you definitely won't be able to afford recording to 2" tape for a while. I would personally keep it if you think it is still very usable (50% worn), like you said, when are...

Recording on TSR8 straight into Pro Tools

Which means, without a sync device, well... you will be out of sync and that gives you much less options for digital editing when you can't match up the beats and bars. I have a very similar setup only that I have a 3 head reel to reel and so can monitor off the playback head and once I make up...

    modern tape machines?

That is how I do it on my 8 track reel to reel. You get much greater editing capabilities when you mix on the computer. Also, if you already have a pretty good music production program... you get all the compressors/eq/reverbs etc. built in whilst buying all that outboard gear (although could...

    modern tape machines?

To fix your 'latency' issue, you just need an 8 channel digital audio interface. That will keep all 8 separate tracks aligned when it is on the computer then you can mix away in the box. Even if you get a 16 track recorder, you will have the same problem if you want to do mixing on the computer...

    modern tape machines?

Just do a google search and you will find it, but really, it sounds pretty bad (although the songs and performances are great). The released album was recorded on 2" 24 track tape running through a Neve desk. The drums were done through a Scully 8 track. Apparently, the album cost him over...

What is the condition of these Tape Heads? PHOTO

Yes definitely clean the rollers and the heads. When they are that dirty it could start to affect the record and repro levels. 99% alcohol with a cotton swab or makeup remover pads.

    Tape Rubbing on Reel

Shouldn't be too big of an issue. For my Fostex R8, this problem of the tape rubbing against the reel pops up from time to time, I just simply push or pull out the tension arm slightly until it stops rubbing... My one seems to stay in position so I don't have to 'hold' it with anything but if...

    Overpriced thrift store junk!

The point I am trying to make is that the price of old analog gear IN PARTICULAR is run by a supply and demand principle... since there is no RRP of a similar brand new item to go by. They don’t behave as one would expect a reasonable person to behave How so? Are you suggesting that if the...

    Overpriced thrift store junk!

What it is 'really worth' and what is the 'fair price' for any piece of analog gear for sale is whatever the highest bidder is willing to pay. You can complain all you like but if someone is paying 500 dollars for something you would only pay 50 for... the fair price is still $500. If the seller...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Absolutely loved this, genuine 60s psychedelic sound! Especially liked the 1st and 3rd songs. I actually like the vocal effect with the wet signal in one channel and the dry signal in the other. There are countless albums (even very recent ones) that utilize this effect, it allows you to use...
