    Fostex Reel to Reels

Agree with Ron here. A Fostex R8 paired up with a Fostex 812 is a very good mixing/recording combo to work with. Have been using this combo a lot and never really given me any trouble. The transport on the R8 is a bit flimsy with all the plastic components but there is no other 8 track reel to...

    BASIC QUESTION about CLASP system

Yeah, when you think about it... the CLASP system is good for those that have an established digital setup and only wish to 'add-on' the option of recording through the tape machine. For those whose studio is based around analog tape, a synchronizer and an interface into Pro Tools would get the...

    Starting with cassettes?

So do you want a multitrack recorder or just a cassette player to play old cassettes? If you just want a decent cassette player, you can get a midrange Sony or Philips player for $30. I got a perfectly working mid-spec Sony dual cassette deck for $10 with two speeds, 3 different NR (switchable)...

    Back To The Basics

How are you defining better? I would say many home digital studios are more versatile (more tracks, ease of editing, more effects) but the top end studios in the 50s and 60s had some amazing boutique/high end compressors, preamps and microphones which are much better than what you would find in...

    analog or not?

Without any proof, I don't believe this. It's more likely that the tape losing magnetic flux over a 24 hour period will be more significant than the magnetic particles not having enough time to conduct and 'settle' before they are reproduced and converted to digital. It would be easy to test...

    First Analog Recorder

I'd like to add also Fostex B16 and Fostex E16 are both 16 tracks on 1/2" tape and the excellent Fostex G16/G16S. The G16 is better built and perhaps better sounding than the B16 and E16 and around about on par with the Tascam MSR16 (although some would regard the G16 to be best 1/2" 16 track...

    Flutter Emergency!!!

Most likely the belt needs to be replaced. I've opened up my 32 a couple of times with little difficulty so you should be able to do this and just see what is the situation with the belt. I'm pretty sure replacement belts for the Tascam 32 are readily available on US eBay and these things are a...

    1/2" multitrack as mastering machine?

The bass roll-off and the head-bump will be an octave higher (twice the frequency). 30ips may look good in your mind, but look at it on paper (screen) - Response Curves of Analog Recorders

The Loudness Wars Again... And a study

I'm no expert but from a physics stand point this seems incorrect. The heat sink is resonating, it doesn't produce it's own sound so when your speaker is putting out 'hugely large amount of decibels' the heat sink will resonate more and hence get louder. Unless the speaker is specifically...

    Record on *ancient* medium?

I don't want to jinx it but it's been working rock solid. One machine as I mentioned is in as new condition and had very little use but the other is a pretty well used machine... still they sync up within seconds and stay locked for the whole tape! Yes just the Fostex 4030 and had to make the...

On the usefulness of ADAT in today's recording environment

Tape is too expensive these days to be doing that! :D Cheers to that! :drunk:

On the usefulness of ADAT in today's recording environment

The digital clipping is the big issue and there isn't much of that anywhere until you start converting your signals to digital... I'm not saying that digital clipping is inherent in the digital recording medium but if they used all analog gear it would have sounded much better IMO.

On the usefulness of ADAT in today's recording environment

It's all a play on words really isn't it? :D OK if I make it clearer then.... surely you agree a DAT recording is harsher sounding than recording on 2" tape. Analog tape sounds warmer to me than listening to the actual pre-recorded signal in the control room so I'd say that analog tape makes...

On the usefulness of ADAT in today's recording environment

Well I'm sure you will agree that it sounds less harsh (warmer) than if it were tracked to DAT. See Metallica's last few releases (Lulu, Death Magnet, St Anger) for extreme digital harshness. Although IMO the sound quality in those cases is not what makes those albums unlistenable.

    Record on *ancient* medium?

I forgot to mention that I record differently than you, whilst you are a 1 man band, I record albums for 5-7 piece bands and lately we have been recording live to tape with minimal overdubs. When I sync the R8's I get 14 tracks simultaneous recording which I usually use 12 all at once then the...

    Record on *ancient* medium?

Very interesting to see this... I have compiled a list similar to yours as I too have a digital rig (slowly selling off) and a completely analog rig. Your digital set-up was cheaper because you were happy to mix all ITB and use plugins instead of outboard gear. Say you had exactly the same...

Fostex R8 issue - please help!

I wouldn't call it terrible... it is poorly designed but is an easy fix and it's a good 'wear indicator' for any second hand R8 you are looking to buy. I bought one recently that looked like it had barely any use and when I checked the plastic pulley and belt, you can see that it hadn't ever...

Fostex R8 issue - please help!

The brake bands may be 'holding' the reels as they spin but more likely that they have fallen off/out of alignment and this is what is causing the problem. If it's not this, make sure you check the plastic pulleys on the thin metal motor shafts (that they are not slipping or fallen off) and...

How do you get recordings on 1/4 tape onto vinyl?

Very appealing indeed! I've recorded a number of analog albums... my ones have all been very cheap and the process works in favour of some of my bands I have recorded with! Recording the entire band live to tape should be a lot quicker and better than recording each section of the song and each...

How do you get recordings on 1/4 tape onto vinyl?

+1 to everything briank and lonewhitefly have said. I think more than half of new albums that I have listened to in the last 2-3 years have been analog recorded. And it's not because I avoid digitally recorded music (how would I know without listening to it) but it's just that it's become very...
