What would make a good, economical set up from tape to pc?

Allen & Heath ICE16 or Cymatic LR16 for a straight 16 channel input and output interface, no bells and whistles. I use echo audiofire 12 which is similar but 12 channel I/O. I think the Allen and Heath and the Cymatic are both USB based while the Echo is FireWire.

    New studio space...considering my options.

Challenge accepted :p I've had to deal with even more compromised spaces before, over the course of about 2 years I recorded 3 albums and about 50 demos with a 3 piece band in a 12ft x 10ft bedroom with a couch, bed, drumkit, guitar amp, mixer and tape machine. I might have to bake some...

    New studio space...considering my options.

Yes I think so :D Let's not take away from the good studio vibes going on in this thread though

    New studio space...considering my options.

Correct, it's a townhouse. Unfortunately it's not a full purpose built studio, it still needs to function as a garage as well - garage door needs to open and close so a small car can get in and out. The idea is to have the recording equipment all setup, tape machine, mixer, rack equipment...

    New studio space...considering my options.

Very cool Miroslav! I happen to be just starting build on a new house and will be setting up my studio in the new (single car) garage. I've got much more serious soundproofing issues to address, one wall of the garage adjoins to my new house whilst the other wall adjoins my neighbors master...

New tune recorded with Tascam 688

Agree, and I would think a 16 tracks on 1/4" tape would probably need to precede 16 tracks on cassette. Cool tune by the way, reminds me of Thom Yorke's ANIMA release earlier this year - which I loved.

Otari MKIII Head spot Question and a few beginner questions

Standard option from factory. I think Miroslav mentioned recently that he got a Otari 1/2 track that had 1/4 track playback option, it can come in handy.

    Currently made cassettes?

The problem is that the Tascam/Fostex portastudios are setup from factory to run on High bias/type ii tape. As the name suggests, it requires a higher bias frequency than type I tape so you get a more muffled sound running type i tapes. People on this forum have posted positive results rebiasing...

FOSTEX R8 chewing up Tapes ???

The general consensus around here is that Ampex tapes manufactured after 1995 and any Quantegy branded tapes are not prone to Sticky Shed Syndrome. This has been true in my experience as well. As such, sealed Ampex 457 tapes manufactured in 1998 shouldn't have any issues and can confidently be...

What Do You Do With All Your Old MASTERS ???

I've kept mine even though some are 1/4" 4 track or 8 track which I don't have the machines anymore to play. It's good to make a habit of digitizing tapes before selling off a machine (I mostly did this). It's also not that hard to buy a working machine, use it to do the transfers then sell it...

Advice on analogue mixing for home studio

Keeping 14 inputs separate and not having to re-patch means that you will probably have to find a 16 channel mixer with direct outputs on each channel, which will have quite a big footprint. There isn't much you can get new that's worthwhile (as it sounds like you want something that imparts...

    Bozak CMA 10-2 stereo mixer

Super cool, glad to see someone with a very similar unit. Initially I thought the mono/stereo switch being for toggling between mono and stereo channels... but found out that this is not actually the case. I've had a tech friend do some great work on my unit to make it more useful for...

Well it did sound like it held up pretty well in the extreme conditions :D

    Tascam 388 Prices?

Sorry, I very respectfully ask how you have concluded this? I believe the heads on the Tascam 38/48/58/TSR8 all have the the exact same part number. Potentially the crosstalk and track level problems you experienced are more to do with inconsistencies/variations in manufacturing rather than a...

Using Otari 5050 8 track with 388 mixer

You'll be all good then if it is. I have the MX5050 Biii 2 track version which is only +4dB.

Using Otari 5050 8 track with 388 mixer

Also note that you will have a level mismatch, Tascam's 0VU line level is -10dB whilst the Otari's is +4dB. To get decent levels into the Otari you'll have to drive the outputs on the 388 mixer above their designed levels.

    Tascam 388 Prices?

You can get extremely high fidelity with a 2 track tape deck (1/2 track) running at 15ips. I have an Otari MX5050 but even the Tascam and Fostex decks are very high fidelity in this format, noise reduction is optional. You can't really do multi-track recording though but you can do live to two...

    Tascam 388 Prices?

Funny how much of what you say about the 388 resonates with what a Tascam audio tech here in Melbourne was saying about the 388 as well. His name is Zoran and he worked as an employee for Teac's professional division (TASCAM) as the head tech up until they closed up shop then was continued to...

    Tascam 388 Prices?

Yes, the Space Echo craze is very real - an essential instument in every psych band in Melbourne. I think the next craze will be the standalone multitrack harddisk recorders from a couple of decades ago - Roland VS1680 and I saw a fully working Tascam 2488 neo sell for $50 the other day. The...
