After seven years of DAW, I will NEVER abandon tape again.

Compared to analog yes, there is definitely less of a sonic 'footprint' but to say that the digital medium is transparent at normal usage is just not true. This is easily argued with the fact that if today's digital recording was 100% transparent then why would there be high end digital...

Too much tape hiss when recording (R2R)

Don't do this on a machine that you plan to use with DBX though as the DBX will greatly exaggerate the distortion and it will sound bad.

After seven years of DAW, I will NEVER abandon tape again.

Exactly what I do as well and agree, best results. But really, the "best of both works" hybrid setup is just both of the worlds combined (all the good and all the bad), twice as many things to go wrong and you still have the tape machine maintenance, maintaining all the hardware and keeping it...

After seven years of DAW, I will NEVER abandon tape again.

It's nice to romanticize things but at the end of the day, it's about the sound YOU prefer. A lot of people prefer the sound of tape because that's what they grew up with or that's the medium that a lot of their favorite songs were recorded to so the sound is familiar to them and if you record...

Getting into the reds on my Tascam M512..to satisfy the hybrid setup

Your DAW is probably set at +4dBm while the Tascam would be OVU = -10dBm. Not sure about the ICE16 but usually you can change the operating level of the I/O's in your DAW.

Tricks and secrets of recording on a four-track

Yes agree, but some people swear by the distortion/clipping characteristics of the built-in pres of a 90's Mackie mixer (I'm not joking :D ). Especially electronic music producers, they love that stuff. Daft Punk almost single-handedly made the "so bad it's good" Alesis 3630 desirable. Just look...

Tricks and secrets of recording on a four-track

Tape flanging effect also a good one. YouTube Also tape delay (utilizing the gap between record and playback head). Monitoring off the playback head for a single slapback effect or feeding this signal back into itself for multi delay. Not necessarily tape based but definitely 'analog' is...

Transferring 8 track reel to digital and dbx issues

Never had old tapes, bought the machine with worn heads and replaced them before I recorded anything.

Transferring 8 track reel to digital and dbx issues

This aligns with what I was told when replacing the heads in my Teac 80-8. He was the only Tascam approved tech in Australia for all their equipment from about mid-80s. He placed the heads in my 80-8 with Tascam 38 heads but said they were not the same and wouldn't be compatible with previous...

Finding the right mixer for my Tascam 48 & Routing Questions

The M1516 is a good mixer, great if you want 16 channel mixer but don't want something too bulky. The limitation with it compared to other 16 channel Tascam mixers is that it only has direct outs on 8 of the 16 channels, which is fine for you if you are only doing 8 track tape recording, but it...

    Studio Build Documentation

I'm nearing the finish line with my home build as well in a month or two and am quite nervous about supply issues and possible delays due to work restrictions.

Problems getting any results out of a fostex R8

1/2" machines are generally less prone to dropouts and issues like this (better build quality as well). If you have the time and money to find a 1/2" machine in better working order and are happy to pay twice as much for the tape then I would suggest this option. Fostex R8 is a capable tape...

Problems getting any results out of a fostex R8

Don't expect high fidelity from channel 1. Put a kick drum or bass guitar on edge tracks. Your machine might be in need of electronic and mechanic alignment for the tape you are using. That said, you won't ever get a completely static noise floor from this machine, especially the edge tracks...

    Studio Build Documentation

This is the hardest part I think. I'm going through similar, building a new house (with studio space) over the last 4 months with probably another 3 months to go before I have the new studio setup. I've been able to catch up regularly for jam sessions with some friends during the entire build...

    Son Of Tascam 58 Story...

That's going to be a super nice setup, the 58 hooked up to the prototype Tascam mixer. Do you still have the BR20?

    Tascam 388 question

I personally wouldn't be trying to push the levels to tape on any machine with DBX as that noise reduction system inherently exacerbates any peaks and troughs in the frequency response and also any distortion ie. any subtle tape saturation you are trying to achieve will very quickly become not...

Picked these up the other day...

Yeah I have a bit of an obsession with early DBX gear... original DBX 160, pair of original DBX 163's, DBX 900 rack (full) and the trusty DBX 119.
