For those without a choice... mastering plugins?

For the price of the Waves plugs, I'd go with the Universal Audio UAD-1 card with the Pultec and Precision EQ. Great sounding software for less than $1000 total.

mastering some tracks is my downfall...

Don't expect to be able to do something perfectly if you know you don't have the experience or tools to do it properly. If you're going to be doing this often and need a tool to be able to get "decent" result, I'd go with T-Racks. However, if you're only doing this once, get a mastering...

For those without a choice... mastering plugins?

Playing the game that you're playing, T-Racks isn't a bad option.

What gear could give me agressive tube drive?

TL Audio (HHB in the USA) has a few pieces available in that range. Or, M-Audio "TAMPA" or The Brick.

Mic Pres .. going to Line In or Direct to Recorder?

I have a Mackie board and I wouldn't use the EQs unless I had no other option and the mics were glued in place. They're as bad as the worst software EQs.

    Multi-channel preamps with Adat option?

Oh really? I'm here every day and didn't notice them. Strange. I'm losing my mind with my old age.

    Multi-channel preamps with Adat option?

I'm looking at getting a multi channel preamp with the adat option to add another group of channels to my Motu recording rig. Right now, the Focusrite Octopre looks the most appealing but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any others that could compete. Price isn't that important, as long as the...

    EQ Help Please

Instead of noting that "250hz is muddy", try to hear exactly what 250hz sounds like. Boost the hell out of it and listen to it. Now boost 350hz, then 450, then 550... listen to them all. They can all be "muddy", depending on the source. The problem is that those frequencies can also be the life...

Oktava MC-012 or Studio Projects C4 for overheads?

Someone suggested that I pick up the CAD ICM-417 overheads as a part of a really low priced drum kit package from CAD. I did. The rest of the kit isn't anything special and I wouldn't use the dynamics on anything other than toms but the little ICM-417s are great overhead mics. The whole kit cost...

    EQ Help Please

This is the most obvious downfall of the digital age. Here's someone who has the technology to download programs which can record and manipulate audio at quality levels totally unheard of 10 years ago and absolutely no idea how to do it. I don't mean to make you feel bad... I just think you're...

The Mastering Process applied to unwanted noise!

The best thing to do would be to re-track the bass. That would probably be your only real "fix" to the problem. Otherwise, try to find the frequency and cut it out... or, just tell the band that they have to deal with it. If it's there, it's not the job of the mastering engineer to remove it...

    TL Audio

I've got the 5001 and use it on drum tracks and as a direct for bass all the time. It's great. The tube gain stage is great for different colours, if you're into pushing things hard sometimes. Overall, I'm happy with it.

    Mic Recommendation

If you don't own a Shure SM-57, you should. It's not the best mic for any application (other than maybe snare drum), but it'll do everything at a reasonable quality level.

    Help Please

Try this: Use the right mic in the right place and maybe one EQ plugin.

    compression?

You might soon realize that a compressor can't fix your recording. Everything about the performance is still going to be a part of the performance, no matter what you do to it. Set a compressor to tame the peaks of both the snare and kick tracks. If you think you have a 6db difference between...

Ever heard a "Classic Sounding" Demo ?

If you find yourself saying "That's good enough" - stop, go back, and re-do it.

    pet sounds

I just picked up MIU, Carl and the Passions, L.A. and Holland yesterday. All albums I hadn't heard before. They're so good. The post-Pet Sounds stuff was just awesome.

    Inputs on a delta 1010lt

There are 8 inputs. They are labelled as stereo pairs, but you can definitely use them as 8 mono inputs or outputs. You can also use them as 4 stereo ins and outs.

    any merit in cassette?

As an effect on a recent mixing project, I dumped 4 stereo subgroups to an 8 track cassette machine and back into the DAW as 8 tracks. It changed the sound a fair bit - losing some extreme lows and highs, as well as working as a sort of compression. I'll use it as an effect again. I'm sure it...

    Mastering guide/info

If you're going to go this route, I'd buy T-Racks. It's a decent program for $250-300. Definitely a few levels above the Audition plugins.
