    M-Audio Tampa

I bought one in February, used it on a couple records and now I'd like to sell it. Nothing against the unit at all - I really like it. I'm just moving on to something else that suits my purposes a bit better. I'm in Toronto, Canada. Any offers? The one light has burnt out (it happend on day...

Izotope Ozone 3? or Waves L3?

For the money, go with Voxengo. The bang for buck ratio with them is amazing. Also, if you don't yet have the UAD card, pick that up too. They have a great limiter for $200 as well as a few great EQ and compression plugs that sound like they're worth a lot more than what you'll pay.

    Tube mixer, powered or unpowered

TL Audio makes a tube mixer.

    compression

Basically, a compressor reduces the volume by a set ratio after a set point (threshold). If that's what you want, study the audio and set the compressor to do what you need done. BE CAREFUL! You can easily ruin a record by misusing a compressor. Trust me.

how can i obtain the benifits of recording analog AND maximize my budget

Maybe try recording digitally, mixing digitally, but running the stereo mix to tape before the mastering process? It's not quite the same as recording analog, but it's a lot cheaper and would still get some benefits of analog tape in the process.

    Ribbon vs. Tube Mics

Rent or borrow a couple of each and try them out. Both can be expensive.

    JOe Meek preamps opinions anyone?

I have a ThreeQ that I bought for quick overdubs in the mixing stage or for playing around with my own stuff. I've only used it on a few projects, but it does what I expected it to do. I also have a TwinQCS that I've used on 5-6 recording projects with great success. If you like the sound, I...

    studio essentials

Start with a decent soundcard. I have an M-Audio Delta 1010lt on one of my computers and it sounds fine. A HUGE step up from anything that comes with your computer. Read as much as you can about microphones and what people say about them. There is tons of information on these message boards...

Just recorded a bad band...I need tips on how to mix them

Why are you putting so much emphasis on turning this band into something they're not? Maybe you just don't get what they're trying to do. It's possible. I remember being young and thinking that most of the engineers in my area clearly had no idea what I was doing musically, with all their...

fix the mix or the master?

Try to define in more quantitative terms the difference between "warmth" and "mudd". Basically, what you recorded from your instruments is what I call "what you did". When people ask how to get a mix sounding a certain way, I always ask them to review "what you did" to see if it's in line with...

Jim Peterik's studio - no dynamics?

It's all a matter of taste. Like an artist who only paints with big brushes -- it's not "wrong", just a bit strange. Still doable though.

    Compressor plug-in presets

A compressor doesn't work like EQ where a preset is going to have a specific sound... or permutation of the source (not that I suggest EQ presets either, but they make a bit more sense). Compressors act TOTALLY differently depending on what you give it as source material. Even though there are...

    Boss ME-50 or PodXT

I just bought the PODxt today. So far so good but I haven't heard the sounds in a mix yet. Does anyone have any opinion about the tone upgrades?

What's the best mid-priced stereo mic pre?

I just got one yesterday for an audiobook project I've got coming up this weekend. An SM7 through the ThreeQ with no EQ and a tiny bit of compression on the peaks sounds HOT.

    2nd mic for electric guitar

I'd pick up the Beyer M201. When recording a brutally loud rock band the other day, it was the only mic that felt perfect... and we had access to everything.

What's the best mid-priced stereo mic pre?

I'd go with a used Joemeek TwinQCS. I got mine for $500 Canadian and it's pretty well equipped with an EQ and stereo/dual-mono compression and BIG VU meters. The Joemeek "dark" sound (and EQ) would work out well if you're recording live bands where the cymbols would be a bit louder than a normal...

Best Sounding Album of all time

Agreed. This is my favourite album musically and sonically.

    My Mastering Perspective

As a recording/mixing engineer, your job is to get the album sounding the way you want it to sound. You want to send it off to the mastering engineer knowing that with a slight volume boost, you'd get exactly what you're looking for. The mastering engineer is there to hear the limitations of...

shure sm7 - worth the bucks?

The SM7 is really good for a dry, flat vocal sound. I use it for bass guitar and heavy, distorted guitar. It works out well. Sometimes I'll use it as a vocal mic, but usually only has a "dry effect".
