Drum submixes - some advice please

If you're nervous, back up this session first. Worst case, you just go back to where you are now.

    Eq Ying/Yang Effect

If you know what to cut, cut it. Boosting usually sounds less natural. If you know you want to boost say 80hz, try cutting 70hz or 90hz a little bit. Sometimes cutting frequencies around the ones you'd want to boost gives a similar effect. Sometimes it'll ruin your mix, so listen and be careful.

mastering tip for us home types

Two things should change when using two passes instead of one. 1. The program will be used twice, which makes the signal chain that little bit longer and theoretically worse. 2. The ratio of the compression/limiting will change exponentially - but, given that the L1 probably works very close...

    An EP I mixed.

Thanks so much. The drummer plays the hi-hats a bit too loud in the chorus of Track 5 and I probably could have put in some extra effort to fix the way that comes across, but that's the biggest problem I have with the whole EP... so, that's not bad at all.

Track 2 is also a favourite.

    An EP I mixed.

http://www.arcsmusic.com/forourfriends I particularly like Track 5, but they're all good. These guys wrote and recorded everything really quickly using the small studio at their school (focusrite pres, apex mics, etc). They brought it to me to see if I could bring it to the next level. I'm...

Producer ego is probably the most annoying thing in the world, regardless of who's right or wrong.

Who's cheap gear do you trust the most?

I had to mix a live show on a Behringer mixer once. It was definitely one of the scariest moments of my life. The whole time, I thought it might catch on fire. It just felt weird... I love my M-Audio BX8 monitors and the Delta 1010lt isn't bad either. The Art VLA compressor has treated me well too.

    microphone for bass amplifier

I've been using a Shure SM7 with great success. Also, try any LDC blended with DI signal. Often two bass signals (in phase, of course) sound really nice.

Apex 460 review from Mix Magazine...

I worked on a record recently that had all the vocals recorded with one of these mics through a focusrite platinum preamp and they sounded fine. A little muddy at times, but it may have been the singers voice. For $300-ish (Canadian), I think I'm going to pick one up this week.

    Pultec Eq Color and UAD-1

I really like the UAD pultec pro. As John said, it's worth the price of the whole card. I also get a lot of use out of the 1176SE and the LA2a too. If my UAD card broke today, I'd buy a new one by tomorrow at noon. ** I'd like to add that I also suggest clients pay an extra $500 to have their...

    CAD or APEX

I've used the CAD drum mic kit a few times. The kick drum mic is horrible. It sounds like plastic. If you get this kit, sell the kick mic. The tom mics are pretty good with nice placement and a little EQ. I try to use them with clips so they get a bit more ring and not so much "slap", but...

    How to Run a Studio

I am opening my first recording studio in two weeks, so this information comes to me at a great time. Thanks so much for your insight. Myers-Briggs always gives me the INTJ reading and the "influencer" outline you describe couldn't be more like me if you knew me.

Anyone NOT like the UAD-1 Plug-Ins?

Oh you guys! Don't do this to me! I'm opening a studio next month and spending all my extra money on cables, stands and snakes.... so, I really can't afford this right now. I bet I can put it off a month. (I think I can, I think I can...)

Anyone NOT like the UAD-1 Plug-Ins?

Voxengo makes amazing stuff for the price. Some of it looks really bad, but it sounds good and that's really all that matters. The Gliss EQ sounds nice to me. T-Racks is shit. It should be in high school media classes so kids can learn how to use compression because it's cheap and I like the...

Mixing in the old tape days....

It's amazing how quickly the "tape days" are becoming the "old days" in the home studio world. I'm SO glad I got started in a pre-digital world. Like growing up in a poor family, you really learn to appreciate stuff when you have it. Mixing and editing are a hell of a lot easier digitally. Even...

    Advantages of having two RNC's?

Oh, I didn't know they were stereo. Just one will do fine then.

    Advantages of having two RNC's?

This is one of those times where using your head makes more sense than listening to your friends. Two look nicer in a rack and could work on stereo sources, but if you're only EVER recording one track at a time, having one makes a lot more sense. Unless you want to run one at a low ratio and one...
