    The Shocking Truth

Shock and awe :D Good one! Gotta keep it clean around here. :D Seems like it's easy to forget the simple things when we get caught up in all the minutia of what's in front of us. I was just thinking about how many times I have slammed those headphones on during a critical recording and zappo...

    The Shocking Truth

........and so it was just the other day I walked into my recording studio and grabbed my cup of coffee, hit the record button and then put my headphones on to monitor the progress. Lo and behold what did I see but a big fat sound wave right in the middle of the track display which occured just...

    Tape Speed Question - Akai GX-4000 D

I am considering buying a Sony TC-366 or 377 which plays at 1 7/8, 3.75 and 7.5 ips. Does anyone have any experience with these decks? Thanks for the tip on halving the speed in software. I will give it a try. :) Right now I am thinking that I will use the Akai for 3.75 and 7.5 ips transfers...

    Tape Speed Question - Akai GX-4000 D

Yes the tapes have two sides and my Akai GX-4000 is a 4 track which can play them just fine. I use Audacity for sound editing so I will try to adjust the speed down to the slower rate and see if the playback sounds right. I also have access to an old Roberts tape deck which may play the slower...

    Tape Speed Question - Akai GX-4000 D

1 7/8 ips Sounds good. I will check into getting the capstan collar for the 7.5 ips. Some of my reels are marked that they were recorded at 1 7/8 ips. I know that this is the standard speed for 'cassette' recordings. How would I go about playing a 1/4" reel at this speed? Would I need to get an...

    Tape Speed Question - Akai GX-4000 D

I have open reel tapes recorded at 1 7/8 ips, 3 3/4 ips, 7 1/2 ips and 15 ips. When I play them some of the tapes sound fast and some sound slow when I play them on my Akai GX-4000 D ( I like my Akai! ). The tapes recorded at 3 3/4 ips sound just fine. Some of the others play too fast. Does...

'MONO' or 'STEREO' for voice recording?

I am recording one voice and the person is close mic-ed in a medium-sized room. If this was being recorded in a professional recording studio and the final target was Audio CDs would it be recorded in 'mono' first and then processed to 'stereo'? What are the advantages of recording in 'mono'?

    General Vocal Recording Question

I agree with Chris. I replaced my SB soundcard with an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 soundcard with great results. Make sure that you run your mic into a good preamp and then into the "line-in" on your soundcard.

Cassette tape noise clean-up on wav file

Om "The sound that is not made by two things striking together" or the "unstruck sound". Have any of you heard this? Joseph Campbell describes it as the unheard hummings of atoms and molecules. Maybe there is sound in space afterall.
