    Audio Technica 2020, ideas?

I have a 2020 and it's nice as a personal "vocal reference" mic. But I think the Studio Projects B1 is smoother on the bottom/mid-range and is a LDC major budget "sleeper" vocal mic-as long as you have a pretty good ("carry a tune" or better) singer. Chris

Any good recording gear store in LA?

Carlos, if you've already purchased the Joe Meek 3Q that's cool. But... If you haven't, let me know. You're welcome to send a private message at this BBS too. I have a Joe Meek 3Q in mint condition-complete (like most of my gear/non-smoker BTW!) that you could get a nice deal on. Otherwise...

Favorite Mic and Preamp Set up For Vocals

Love a Shure Unidyne capsule SM57/546/SM7 (or "soundalike" Beyer M400 Soundstar MKII) going into a UA 610 tube mic pre for my baritone voice. These can all be pounded into submission later via EQ for enough air/top end if needed. When time and budget permit, am planning to pick up a Universal...

Famous tracks recorded with Shure SM7b...

FWIW a nice alternative to a SM7 is the Beyer (or Beyerdynamic) M400 Soundstar MKII. IMHO it usually works better with a prosumer mic pre vs. the SM7. I suppose another good choice would be the transformer-less mod on a SM57 or '58. Anyway... IIRC the SM7 has been used on various Sheryl Crow...

    MA-200 & isa 220

Thanks, all the best with the U87. IMHO it's a fine vocal microphone. BTW the MA-200 is reputed to quite U67ish in tone. Chris

    MA-200 & isa 220

Roush, please excuse the delay... My understanding is that the U87 is well known to work well on pretty much ANY vocalist- if the AE is up to the task. FWIW some "other" choices that could do the same for you are the 'umble SM57 (or 58), and the SM7 (its big brother). Chris P.S. At a party...

Condensor Mic Rec for tenor male voice?

Out of the various LDC's I've tried, in addition to the T3, also the Studio Projects CS series. James Lugo (Gearslutz moderator), who has a VERY fine tenor voice liked the CS too FWIW. IIRC the current vocalist for Santana swears by the T3. Chris

    MA-200 & isa 220

IMHO a good parametric EQ, along with good monitoring ought to go far with the MA-200... Chris

Shure SM58 vs Studio Projects B1 vs Audix OM2

IIRC Bob Ohlsson (a top AE), said the IV series captured more full sound of the bottom octave vs. the 57/545's. As I understood, he also stated they were more relatively hit and miss with the source, whereas the 57/545's matched more consistantly with the sound source. I've noticed that the...

Help! Need condenser mic recommendations for female voice!

Add a dynamic vocal mic to your shortlist, the Electro-Voice 635a omni. They run about $100 new, or $80 used when I checked a while back. VERY underated IMHO... Chris

Shure SM58 vs Studio Projects B1 vs Audix OM2

In the Studio Projects LDC lines, the top three that sounded really good on my (bartone/2nd tenor) voice, were the CS series, T3, and the B1-in that order. The B1 was somewhat "bright" and "present" going through an Avalon 737. Without much EQing, the B1 seemed well suited for the more current...

Full Circle - My Love Affair With the Shure SM7B (and the SP VTB-1!)

IHMO another way to go is to get a nice parametric EQ "outboard" (I have an Orban 242), and a SM57. Possibly an inexpensive or free computer "plug-in" EQ, but I'm really not qualified to know how well that'll work for you. Chris

Will a Great V/O Mic also be a Great Singing Mic?

Thanks HD for the 635a feedback. BTW Bob Ohlsson, a top AE, thinks they can be a great vocal mic if you run 'em through a high end pre. I tried that Neumann out at a couple of NAMM conventions, and IMHO it's a nice sounding condenser. Personally prefer vocal mics, however, with more forgiving...

    Shure USA Unidyne 548SD Anyone?

Hi Fab, sorry for the delay responding... Overall doing good. Will try to remember to send you a PM with a more detailed overview soon. Glad to hear the 'ol 545 is serving you well. It's been very "ear-opening" for me to see/listen to the old concert footages on you-tube where they've used a...

Will a Great V/O Mic also be a Great Singing Mic?

From my limited experience... (pro AE's like Ronan are much more authoritive!) +1 on SM7, and RE20. BTW IMHO the EV RE15 (or RE16) are also strong contenders, along with the Sennheiser MD421 (not the new one!) seem to be generally suggested for heavier voiced baritone and bass singers. The...

    Shure USA Unidyne 548SD Anyone?

I have a 548, it's in storage and my ex-girlfriend accidently tossed the key to the mic locker. Messed with it enough to get an idea of it. But anyway... Technically IIRC they have more bottom end response than a SM57 (have both USA and Mexican 57's BTW) or 545 (personally have a 546) The...

Why SM57 for vocals over SM58? Aren't the the same capsule?

There's a factor known as microphone "body resonance", it's subtle but since each of the "holders" (sm57 or 58) of the unidyne III capsule are somewhat different, it's an influence to make them sound slightly different as a result-other things being equal. Chris

I need help with choosing a mic

IMHO add the Electro-Voice EV 635a and Electro-Voice RE16 (or RE15) to your candidates. If it's just for you, it's also possible the SM57 (or SM58) works quite well too. Chris

    AKG D120E vs. Beyer M400

Congrats kidvibes! I'm one of "those" singers where the 'umble SM57 (or 58) sound excellent-particularly on blues based genres. But... this Soundstar takes a WHOLE lot less EQ to get the kind of sound I like. Chris

    Sm57 Poll

IIRC the AE John Leckie's posts (sic?) who worked with John Lennon would have more info. BTW Brian Wilson used the Shure 545 ('57 forerunner) on many Beach Boy's cuts as his personal vocal mic. Usually the Neumann U47 (or RCA 77 ribbon) on the group's vocal harmonies. Chris
