Neither did I. I did however have a lot of experience with 4-tracks and a little with reel-to reel. Maybe thats the difference. Maybe the difference is that I, as a computer programmer, am sick and tired of firguring out what quirks this particular program has, and expect things to "just work"...

Most programs have demos available. Try out Tracktion, N-track, Ableton Live, Protools Free, Cakewalk and Cubase. I sure I missed some.

I like how you completely changed the question after I had answered. :) Yeah, tracktion is nice. I use Ableton live, because it has nice beat loop support, it's also easy to use, but tracktion is definitely better value.
