    Rides

I agree; cymbals that are labelled "Crash/Ride" usually do neither particularly well. However, I do have a few rides that also have very nice crash properties. You can find them if you look around and play on a lot of them. Good advice Rimshot--definitely use your ears and not your eyes when...

    Rides

Anything that has a little bit of spread to it (i.e. isn't too thick) will make a nice crash-ride. If it's really heavy and ping-y crashing on it will probably sound really harsh. Generally, the thinner it is, the more crashy it will be.

Micing a kick drum with no port?

It depends on the sound the drummer is going for, the particular track, and the actual sound the drummer gets on the bass drum of course. One pet peeve of mine as a studio drummer is an engineer who's inflexible and automatically assumes that I should have a hole cut in my front head if I...

Can't access click sounds in LE

Has anyone else ever had this problem? When going to use the PTLE click plug-in, the only sound option I have available to me is the stock sound (which I hate, of course!). When I go to access the different click sounds on the plug-in's interface, it only shows <factory default> and nothing...

PT 7.1 to 7.4 upgrade question

Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but I can't seem to find it on Digidesign's FAQ page and I just want to make sure: I'm going to upgrade from 7.1.1 to 7.4 soon (I'll need the full install) and I'm just wondering if I'll need to re-install all of my plug-ins: Waves, Music Production...

    Producing in protools

I think perhaps your question is a tad vague. But I think I can answer it to an extent: Pro Tools works best as a hard-disk recording workstation. You can, of course, use MIDI, loops and samples but you will need to buy seperately not only the sample/loop libraries, but the plug-ins that...

    Drum mic set up?

Also don't forget that if you're using a DAW like Pro Tools (not sure what your platform is), or even if you plan on transferring your tracks to one, you may have the capability of replacing your drum sounds anyway--Sound Replacer does a nice job and you can replace or enhance the bass drum or...

    Drum mic set up?

Also, the Shure PG52 is quite good for the money. It comes in this bundle: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PGDMK6XLR/ or by itself: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PG52XLR I have an engineer I work with who actually uses these mics on my drums. He's a freelance engineer and...

Best Mic Pre under $300 Poll..

Great post Juan! At this point I have a Focusrite Platinum Octopre ($100/channel) along with the 4 built-in pres on my 002R. I'd love to go out and get an API 3124 ($600/chan), but I'm in the process of buying a home, so it's obviously not high on the priority list. And besides, I've been...

    searching for a good snare

Mapex Black Panthers are nice, and not too expensive. Ditto the PDP's (made solidly yet on-a-budget by DW). I'd say definitely check out the Pearl free-floater on ebay as well. You can get a pretty nice-sounding drum and not spend tons of money, but you should still plan on spending between...

Which is better, Maple or Birch? A Dissertation

Great job drumzealot! Some really nice and clear ideas there. I'd like to add that as a drummer who owns both maple and birch kits and snares, I can honestly say that the differences between the two wood types are overblown at best! People always try to put labels on things. "Oh, is this...

    phase with the snare

Hey guys, brand new to this forum! I'm a recording drummer myself... Rimshot, I'd agree with your assessment; I think regular SM57's give a slightly weaker signal, particularly compared to the Beta 57A, which I've been starting to prefer to use on my snare. It has a VERY strong signal. I'd...
