Who's cheap gear do you trust the most?

See when you buy all the expensive stuff that's when you start to gain interest in lofi. I buy equip that costs £5 and it gets more use than some of my more exotic stuff. Ironically my interest in lofi has been increased due to the fact of losing my weekly salary. Granted i use expensive stuff...

Acoustic Kick that sounds like a 808 Sub Kick...

I like ringo, em. I know he's not the best at keeping in time but when you listen back a lot of his beats were very original. I favour imagination over musicianship anyday. Who wants to become a malmsteen cock. If ringo did indeed use seaweed and a branch to play drums, he'd be my hero. :D I...

I got the Lexico Lambda but...

A mesa amp may suit you in contour mode, the best idea is to go down to your nearest retailer and try some amps. Try something that is above your budget, remember you can always get is SH of ebay. State the exact sound your looking for & i have a general rule about trying equipment out, never...

    Music theory must-read books?

Musical theory is something i cannot take in, i've bought books, tried to learn listened to others. I just don't understand it. I've played songs to classically trained people nad they've commented that the vocal line is not following the music or this chord should go here and then go here...

    compress during tracking??

I'm not talking about heavily compressing something in the way in, i'm talking about limiting really, or lightly compressing - soft knee. I find that when i record in this way tracks are easier to digest because there are no overly annoying rises in signal etc. So i am less likely to compress as...

cant play too well when standing

I play guitar standing up all the time now, i had the same problem when i was younger & first started gigging. You get a better feel of the guitar when you play standing up i think, it becomes less of an eye to hand coordination thing and instead you just feel your way around.

    the fender stratocaster is perfect.

That is one factor i've never looked into when buying a guitar, hmm this is poorly constructed, i dont want something that is badly constructed. If it's an effect pedal etc ok i understand, but i've never had a guitar break on me. And if anything does look dodgy electronically i'll rewire it...

    Anyone else take notice?

When recording an idea live it is easier to "bounce" off of a talented vocalist, get more energy into the song. The way in which the singer carries on greatly adjust tempo, dynamics & even arrangment.

Best Cover Version Of Cohen's "Hallelujah"

Do you not see anything of beuty (dyslexia strikes again) in buckley's version though? I'm posative the increased audience in jeffs park is not solely down to the fact of having a pretty face & polished recording for the gen. public to attach to. They are very different versions.

Where do your songs first take form?

My songs come from my head first, i feel inadequet & guilty if i come up with something while sitting down at the piano or playing the guitar. If I write the music and lyrical atmosphere in my head first, then get that recorded then i feel i have accomplished something and i haven't cheated. But...

Best Cover Version Of Cohen's "Hallelujah"

The cover versions are very relevant, cohen wrote many more verses than you hear from his studio recording. Other artists have used different verses to create something different. One of the great things about the song is it's ability to be taken one way or the other. Atmosperically, i think...

    Anyone else take notice?

I think people take vocals for granted>> "anyone can sing" >well it's just one step away from speaking, isn't it<. I mentioned in another thread one of my heros and one of the greatest ever vocalists - Billy Makenzie. The amount of feeling he was able to get into his songs was crazy, bono...

Best Cover Version Of Cohen's "Hallelujah"

Ok let fighting commence, what a great song it is, but who's cover do you prefer? it's been covered by so many artists (I could not list them all). Well i voted for Jeff Buckley, do you disagree? Then explain yourself!! :D

    compress during tracking??

Billy Mackenzie well known as being one of the greatest singers was known to burst microphones etc. Because he could sing so softly then immediatly empty his lungs on a track. If your saying that singers should keep their voice at the same level throughout a track either by moving away from the...
