What set of monitors should I get for a home studio

Treatment is as much for the listening back as it is the recording.

    Basement Sound Reduction

That's all well and good; I'm not a fan of the parroting of misinformation either. I'm in the guitar business, which I believe has more myth surrounding it than possibly any other endeavor, so I get it. But not every single person is an idiot, and just because someone has a different opinion...

    Making Recordings Sound as One

I believe the problem that the OP is talking about is all about compression and harmonic distortion. Sometimes you've got a tight band, good mix, everything sitting well together and it still isn't "glued". If that's the case, I would suggest applying a very small amount of compression (barely...

Am I the only one using a StudioLive 24?

Yeah, that is a pain about the gain knob. I get it, though. It's the only analog control on the board, so it's just not available to the OS.

    Basement Sound Reduction

Man, there is some anger on this forum. I've been here for two weeks and this is the second time I've been harshly and personally attacked for expressing a pretty vanilla opinion in an effort to help a guy out. I said what I said from personal experience. When we brought home my 3-day old...

Am I the only one using a StudioLive 24?

Well, it won't be changing my game. I get enough dirty looks when people find out I don't use ProTools. A Behringer logo on the mixer would pretty much be a nail in the coffin. Shallow? Yep. Narrow-minded? Probly. But, I don't make the rules. :)

Am I the only one using a StudioLive 24?

That makes sense, and I would probably use my mixer more the way you use yours if I had them. I too, go back and forth between inputs and DAW returns constantly. It's not one button, though. It's a per channel thing. Using the faders for aux mixes would be a HUGE plus for me because I use...

Am I the only one using a StudioLive 24?

Interesting thoughts. The tiny display was a big deal for me pre-sale too. I was sure they would come out with a proper sized color one a month after I bought mine. But, honestly I hardly ever even look at the thing. The functions that require it are (for my setup) one-time set and forget...

    Live music setup/sound HELP!!!

Hard to beat the Electro-Voice ZXA1 or for a little more cash the QSC K8/10/12. If you end up doing an acoustic coffee house thing later you can use them as your mains.

Members average number of mics and a list...

That's quite the collection, Lab. I would have thought myself average having a set of drum mics, couple of choices for overheads, a couple of nice vocal mics and a half dozen 57/58 utility mics. I'm very surprised (and inspired) to see that 20% of the people here are getting the job done with...

Am I the only one using a StudioLive 24?

It's completely ideal for my setup because I can go from rehearsal to recording to recording rehearsal without any cabling hassles, but since I've been lurking around here I don't think I've since a single other person that uses one? Does everybody know something I don't? John

Someimes you know you came up with something ground breaking.......

I like it a lot. Great song, well played, nicely produced. Reminds me a little of Neil Young.

I'm still in highschool. Is Audio Engineering a good consideration for a job?

My opinion about college in general is that if you are not entering a field that requires a specific academic path (doctor, pilot, paleontologist), then you are shooting yourself in the foot by getting a specialized degree. Having a business degree will not preclude you from entering the audio...

    Basement Sound Reduction

I had a similar situation and the thing that helped the most (in addition to all the things listed above) was to get two layers of soundproofing in the window recesses with some air between them. Works better than just solid insulation. I cut some Ruxol to fit snuggly against the glass, then...

Need advice for recording a loud singer.

All great ideas, guys. Thanks. The room is heavily treated and I set up a little cocoon of 3" thick panels around singers for extra measure. I did end up using a dynamic EQ on one of the songs and that helped a lot. I'll post back here after the next session with whatever I was able to...

Is there anyway to tighten up a set neck?

Well, I certainly don't want to pick a fight being new here and all, but if you want to know what I do or don't understand about it you can Google me. My company is called CNC Guitar Parts. Please don't think I'm plugging it. Our customers are manufacturers.

Need advice for recording a loud singer.

I guess if I'm being honest, it was there during tracking and I probably just blamed it on the headphones and/or assumed a little compression would tame it. I had her in the same room with me, so the monitoring wasn't ideal. Maybe I'll try to notch it with the condenser on the way in as...

Is there anyway to tighten up a set neck?

Why not? In hindsight, I guess I should've added "take it to your local tech, if you're not comfortable with this procedure".

Need advice for recording a loud singer.

Hey guys, I had a really great singer come down to record and she did a phenomenal job. Really sounded great. But, when I went to do my mix I could not get a good tone. There was this harshness, or resonance at several spots (2.8k, 8-9k). I ended up having to do a LPF on it to get a useable...

Is there anyway to tighten up a set neck?

If you're not seeing any cracks in the finish around the neck joint or any movement there, then you most likely have a poorly routed truss rod cavity. If there was room for the nut at either end to shift and then it stuck there until forced back, that might produce the symptom you're talking...
