Hi,
The difference between monitors is largely down to personnal choice. I have recently been doing plenty of research into this after my old ones died.
If you're budget is low (under £300) then I'd say stick to powered nearfields. There is always a trade off with cheaper speakers. Some have...
Well, this is just it. The individual channel signals are HUGE but aren't clipping. It's only the master buss that was in danger of hitting the red.
It was turned down to about 30% originally without clipping, I just wasn't sure if the individual tracks risked unpleasent artifacts.
... It...
Micing should give you the best tone. I'd also add, make sure you use less distortion than you would do in a live setting. It gives much more power when recorded.
What mic did you try?
Theoretically.
If you recorded a band (individually) at 32/96. And were mixing down... What happens to the individual tracks when they are pushed way up?
Meaning the master fader needs to below halfway just to stop it clipping.
Does it act like tape and compress slightly?? Or is this just...
LMAO! :D
You're right, no shipping. Just walked in and back out with them (I live 5 minutes from the music store!).
Got them stupidly cheap too... £600! Ok that's still a heck of a lot of money but these things are awesome! ;)
Small update... My wonderful girlfriend got a store card for me and encouraged me to 'invest' in the studio.
I am now the very smug owner of a pair of Mackie HR624's... THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
AND they translate perfectly.
*** sorry to be so smug but I'm dead chuffed! :p
I've never seen any.
How would you be controlling teh volume of the active speakers?
I use a small cheap behringer mixer (about £40) for speaker control and headphones. Or you could get a dedicated unit like the samson C Control.
I tried tha. I arranged to hear 5 pairs of monitors, went in on my day off (as arranged) and they only had one in... and they were naff!
They said they will be getting them in soon, until then I'm left hanging. :(
I still use the audiophile. Needing more inputs now... you can however use multiples of these and they are still supported.
You can either use a PCI card or a USB thingy. Or a PCI card with a breakout box. Loads of options.
I'd also say that it's best to have more ins than you currently need...
Hey man
First impressions (although I'm oh headphones not my broken monitors...) Too much bass, nice tone just too much. Also I can hardly hear a word! I don't think it needs any more compression just lift the levels.... Are you the singer? are you shy??
Sounds like a great performance...
The main concideration is how many simultanious tracks you will be recording at once.
If you only need 2 then see my above recommendation - brilliant quality. The 1010 is about the same quality but with the advantage of more ins/outs.
EMU do some nice units.
Read reviews... ask questions...
If it came with the machine as standard chances are isn't not much cop. Well, at least not for music. The best you could hope for is a soundblaster (spits!). I had one briefly and it was a real nightmare.
You'll need one that can handle very low latency. For a perfect starter I'd go for an...
Dude! Another box room sufferer!
I asked a similar question and got this info back.

I'd say set up against the long wall with the window infront of you. If you can draw the curtains when mixing it'll stop the HF coming back at ya and the...
Dude. I did a similar subject for my Dissertation (UK Final assignment for Degree - 10,000 words). That subject is huge. My advise... To explore a subject thoroughly choose a narrow field of research.
Similar to what you've chosen but more streamlined. Ask yourself which area it is that most...
I checked out some Tapco S5's, very inpressive for the cash. Not a lot of real lows but that's not an issue for me because I have a tiny control room. ;)
I also checked out the Wharfedales but wasn't keen at all. I'm going to try the Rk6 this week but I think it's a shoot out between those...
