Ho long is a bass drum hit?

I set the attack to anywhere between 0ms and 35ms. Try bringing the threshhold down as low as it goes and set the attack to 0. Look for when the reduction light goes off as you lengthen the attack time. That should give you some idea of how the compressor you're using will react to the kick...

Recording to an external hard drive

They work just dandy for me. I use a USB2.0 drive with my laptop and get 96 tracks at 24/41 before a dropout.

    ECM8000 or Samson C02?

I have a pair of ECM8000s and for $50 each they're pretty good. The biggest problem I've had with them is they're omni so they tend to pick up the echo off the walls more then I expected when I first used them which makes placement a little difficult. They also have tiny diaphams which I...

    Allen and Heath GL2400-24

The aux outs are balanced -2dBu. The direct outs on the mono channels operate at a 0dBu line level and are impedence ballanced. Damn brits and their wierd numbers :).

    Allen and Heath GL2400-24

I go direct out from my GL2400 into a Motu 24io. It's probably the best you're going to get for less than $100/channel. The direct outs are ballanced 1/4" TRS. It can be configured in a way so that you can have 7 submixes (mono), each with XLR outs. It also has 5 sends if configured that way...

    Best overhead drum mics?

I've had success with these (in order of preference) Rode NT5s- Good overall Rode NTK- Punchy depending on where you put it. Shure SM81s- Shimmery/swishy, but sometimes shrill. Behringer ECM8000s- Grainy, but not objectionably grainy. Placement can be difficult.

    Looking for recording equipment

If you have a laptop, you can get a firepod for $600 which comes with Cubase LE, converters, and preamps. You'd still need another $100 for an external hard drive for more reliable operation though, and it can sort of be a pain to set your computer up for DAW use. I don't know about stand aloans.

What Basic Input Device Do You Use For Your DAW?

$30 Track Ball. I don't have to clear a relatively large space to use it where I would if I had to move a mouse all over the place.

    External hard-drive for my recordings...

I can get 96+ tracks at 24/48 through a USB2.0 connection before having problems with dropouts. I've heard that firewire is generally prefered over USB because USB uses more CPU resources. My external for my portable setup is a 320GB WD Caviar (I think it's even IDE or ATA), Metal Gear Box...

    help Me!

Dedicated DAW: A computer that will be used only for recording. If you aren't using the computer for gaming or anything that needs alot of graphics, you would be better off getting more RAM than getting a fancy graphics card. Delta 1010: A sound card designed for recording (made by MAudio)...

    help Me!

If it is for a dedicated DAW, that graphics card might be a bit overkill. Most people here would recoment a Delta1010 over anthing soundblaster.

    What do commercial artists use?

I've been wondering about this for a while. At what point does upgrading your monitoring chain take priority over upgrading preamps, mics, converters, or sources. It seems like if you're using a behringer mixer and a sound blaster the better monitoring is really only going to replicate the...

Help! Can't get Shure PG48 to record my voice directly onto my PC soundcard

Make sure the switch on the mic is turned on. Is the 1/4" part of the cable TRS. (does it have two rings towards the tip?) Is the adapter TRS. I think both of these should be TS (one ring) and pluged into the mic in on the sound card. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

    cubase dongle help

If it doesn't run without a dongle, it isn't cracked now is it? Cracking software used to be easy, I don't know if it still is, but what you want to do is disassemble the file Cubase.exe and look for the code that checks for the dongle. Then you need to find any other code that references the...
