    How critical are vocal booths?

i don't think they are critical at all. I think that they can be used as a tool to obtain a very dry uneffected sound for anything you put in there. However some of the best vocal recordings i've done have been in very large ambient rooms. It gives you the option of doing a standard close...

    logic 8 and imac g4

installed logic studio on the imac (i upgraded the OS three months ago) works fine. A bit sluggish with a bunch of instruments open, but i can render then as audio as i go. We'll probably get a used power mac g5 or a new mac pro next quarter or so. thanks

Where is your console in the signal chain?

i use a yamaha PM2000 to monitor and mix to 2 track. i use outboard preamps. however, the recorder is 24 ch and the pm2k is 32, so we have 8 channels to use as for preamps and additional inputs at mixdown.

    v69 on a kick drum?

I have done the same thing. In a couple different ways. I've used it along side a transducer speaker mic. The V69 was about 2 feet from the front of the kick and on plane. I also moved the v69 back about 5 feet away, still on plane, and it rounded out the entire set while still representing...

Making Cables - Balanced vs Unbalanced

i have found that if you are using a patchbay and 2 conductor cabling for it, the chances of picking up RFI is high. My setup a few years back mistakingly used 2 conductor cables and an unbal PB and there was so much noise it was ridiculous. Then i started building cables, understanding the...

    headphone amp help

Wrong is a strong word :) The reason to use auxilliary sends instead of the c/r stereo jack is two-fold. 1. In a typical studio setup you will have a control room isolated from the musician's room (tracking room). In this way, you would not want to be controlling the send level to the...

    Digidesign Venue?

ok.....this is easy then! Anytime i'm going to be buying a product, or find myself in a position of having to know how to use a piece of equipment before i get it, i download the manual. What you might want to do is go to digidesign's site and download the manual (if they let you do it) and...

    Digidesign Venue?

One of my friends who runs a live sound company runs them all the time and considers them overkill, and overly-expensive, not to mention digidesign is regarded by some as being a venture capital experiment of Satan himself. although i won't get into that one here.

    AD suggestions

We run our mix buss out to the masterlink stereo recorder. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a 2 channel ad converter that might improve on the quality of our mixes. i'm not dissapointed in the sound, but i will say that at times, it seems that the soundstage of the mixes closes...

    Where to turn?

(quiet you! I've got a whole "I hate Phil Collins" theme going on here. Gotta see it through....although it is time to find a NEW faggooty picture of that tosser. It's aboot bad music, it's aboot a lack o' dignity)

    I hate lyrics

for me the song and the lyrics come together. i can't really write out a whole piece then write lyrics. when i do, the two don't jive turkey. everyone is different. some people write music first, then lyrics or vice versa, or at the same time. I think the key to good lyrics is one line. it...

    Where to turn?

1: If no one else thinks your music is any good, then you need to revaluate your perspective. You might find out you were right all along, and you were talking to the wrong people, or you might find out your music sucks. (also, don't trust your friends opinions of you, they might think you're...

    Mic modding party....

i'd like to ask a general question. How do you guys go about choosing transformers and caps for mic modding? I have an SP ribbon mic that i'd consider modding. the soldering for me is the easy part, but i'm lost on choosing the correct components.

    AT4050, RE20, and which pre for $500?

i like the groove tubes brick and RE20 on lots of different sources. Maile rock vocals, snare drum, mic'd 4 x 10 bass cab. I think with certain acoustics the combo holds up, not to mention it's a DI which adds functionality. I have limited experience with the 512c, and i've never tracked...
