Here's something else to throw in the mix....API/OSA/Averill modules. These are all compatible, correct? If so, I may grab the Averill lunchbox (it's rackable) and a couple OSA Cs or Ls. It'll cost a little more in the beginning, but the ability to add high end pres at $500 a pop later is...
Currently I have:
4 Focusrites in my Digi002
Safe Sound P1
Joe Meek 3Q
I guess I don't necessarily need a "colored" pre as much as something with character. My studio was built for my bands recordings only, and I personally take production cues from John Vanderslice (he uses Neve 33114s and...
Thanks for the input, you have a great looking (and sounding) studio. Right now I'm leaning towards the Sebatron or the UA....the extra $250-$350 I'd save would allow me to pick up the SM7 I've been eyeing lately.
I have a few units in mind, I was wondering if anyone had experience with these or could add to my list.
Sebatron VMP-2000e
TL Audio PA-1
Universal Audio 2-610
Averill 312A
My original thought was to get an RNP for a clean pair and then spend around $1k on a higher end vocal channel. There are so many options in that range, though! The John Hardy M1, the Averill 1272 and 312A, the UA 610 and the Great River are all looking pretty good right now. Also, the...

Ok, I'm convinced. If these sell I'm going with a Great River ME-1NV or an Averill 312A or 1272 (do they have inserts?).
Both of these units are in tip top shape, never even racked, each used once. I've decided I'd benefit more from a single Great River pre than these two. Prices include shipping via UPS ground with insurance. I accept paypal or money orders. PM me for details.
Summit Audio 2BA-221 - $530...
I love the Safe Sound, not getting rid of it. To me, for $180 the Meek is valuable just for the color it provides at such a cheap cost. So, I could get rid of the Summit, which I wasn't blown away by. I'm currently eyeing a Sytek MXP or an RNP/RNC combo....I'd love to go Hardy or Great River...
I just tried this thing for the first time last night with an SP C1 and a 57...not really impressed. It sounded good without the tube stages, but once they were in it got flabby. Am I using it wrong? Or is it a hyped up tooob pre that I should've avoided?
I currently have a Summit Audio 2BA-211, a Safe Sound P1 and a Joe Meek ThreeQ along with the four Focusrite pres in my Digi002. What would be a good preamp to complement these? Let's set the budget at $550.
I'm thinking a little bit on the clean side, here's what I've come up with:
RNP
Rane...
A bit of spam: Joe Meek ThreeQ on Ebay
If these are as colored as everyone is saying I think I need to find something a bit cleaner (my other pre is a Summit 2BA-221). The unit is brand new in the box, never used.
I purchased 2 ThreeQs and I'm definitely keeping the other one.
