    Alan Hyatt

Chris, I too hope to offer all the consolation the internet provides. I myself nearly lost my life, and to see my wife that distraught taught me what it is to live. I hope this isn't too shallow, considering the wires that are between us, but I feel I can relate to you on some level...

    Alan Hyatt

Alan has been a great help to me personally (whether he knows it or not). Of course his own products presume a bias that any manufacturer will display, but Alan always mentions the competition in his posts...which I see as an honorable act. In use, the SP line has been phenomenal, though...

    DIs - $40 vs. $200 - what's the difference?

The OSA hasn't arrived yet. I guess I just figured I'd need a DI since my instruments aren't line level....but then again I'm a newb with little to no knowledge about anything. Thanks for the tip, I'll try that first.

Can you recommend a Mic+Preamp (£700-1000) worth checkin out? (please!)

Remember, he's from the UK....1000 pounds is roughy 1800 US.

Can you recommend a Mic+Preamp (£700-1000) worth checkin out? (please!)

Yeah, it's obvious, but there is a glaring $3000+ discrepancy there. A u195 into a Mackie vs a B1 (cheaper and better than the MXL) into a Great River is a little bit harder of a choice.

Can you recommend a Mic+Preamp (£700-1000) worth checkin out? (please!)

I'm no expert by any means, but it seems to me with mics you can fudge a tiny bit more than with pres. I'd love to hear other opinions on this issue, but it seems to me that a great pre can really take a mediocre mic to the next level, whereas a great mic will merely make the flaws of a cheap...

    DIs - $40 vs. $200 - what's the difference?

I'm looking for a direct box, used mainly to bring bass and rhodes piano to level for use with my OSA pre which only has a line in. In my research I've found the Countryman and Radial boxes to be very well regarded, however, they are generally $150 (more than I'd like to spend, really)...

you don't "have to" but the alternatives aren't that much cheaper anyway

    big knob vs central sataion

Does anyone care to comment about the D/A conversion on the Presonus? Going from my Digi002 to the Central Station via S/PDIF sounds appealing.

Can you recommend a Mic+Preamp (£700-1000) worth checkin out? (please!)

Personally, I'd go balls out on one or the other, then get something decent until you can save up and afford a complementary piece. For example: Great River ME-NV1 - $1100 = £600 Blue Baby Bottle - $500 = £275

Then the choice is simple, try both out, buy the one you like best.

Ibanez TS- Tubescreamer Vs Boss SO-1

tube screamers have a mid-range hump that I loathe....however, it is the most cloned pedal of all time, and a visit to musictoyz.com should introduce you to some nice alternatives. Also, check out www.robertkeeley.com. I cannot recommend his work more.

Snare Mics - Alternatives to the 57

I checked around the archives and hadn't seen a thread like this so.... What are your favorite mics for snare other than the trusty 57? Do LDCs, SDCs or ribbons ever do the trick? I currently am using 57 for snare and it's not the greatest (perhaps my yet-to-arrive OSA pre will change all...

Ibanez TS- Tubescreamer Vs Boss SO-1

I'm not sure this is the right forum....but personally I'd go with the Boss SD-1, cheap, reliable and great sounding.

2 channel colored pre under $1.5k

Unfortunately my budget shrunk to about $1.2k, so now it's down to the Sebatron vmp-2000e or an OSA lunchbox with one of their API style modules. The OSA route looks to be the best in the long run, after the inital investment I can add high end preamps at $500 a pop. Even though I could...
